GENEVA, Ohio — Washington and Lee men's track and field senior Mac Strehler (Moseley, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) finished 18th out of 20 runners in the 10,000m at the 2017 NCAA Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship at the SPIRE Institute on Thursday.
Strehler crossed the finish line in 31:38.39, as a steady rain fell for all 25 laps of the race. He was the fastest runner from the South/Southeast Region, besting Christopher Newport sophomore Grayson Reid (31:56.49).
Senior Ian LaMere of Wisconsin-Platteville took the top spot (29:15.12) in the race for the third straight season. Trailing by over eight meters heading into the final straightaway, LaMere passed junior Darin Lau of Wisconsin-Eau Claire right at the finish line to take the title. Lau placed second in 29:15.16.
Strehler was the first runner in program history to compete in the 10,000m at the national championship. He was also the first competitor at the outdoor meet for the Generals since 2014.
