NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released the all-region honorees for the 2017 NCAA Division III outdoor track and field season on Monday, and the Washington and Lee men's team had six athletes honored in the South/Southeast Region.
Senior Patrick Robertson (Norfolk, Va./Norfolk Academy) and junior Dash Dericks (Spring, Texas/The American School in Switzerland) earned the laurels in two events, while senior Mac Strehler (Moseley, Va./Trinity Episcopal School), sophomores Cooper Baird (Fort Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Country Day) and Drew Pranka (Princeton, Ill./Princeton), and first-year Shep Sims (Charleston, W.Va./Woodberry Forest School) also received the recognition.
Robertson was named all-region in the hammer throw (53.55m) and the shot put (14.72m), while Dericks garnered the honor in the discus (48.66m) and the javelin (55.90m). Robertson's mark in the hammer set a new W&L record, and Dericks' toss in the discus was a new program best. This is the second time Robertson has earned all-region accolades in the hammer and the shot put and these were the first honors for Dericks.
Strehler earned all-region for the second straight year in the 10,000m (30:19.60), while setting a new school record. Baird was recognized in the 1,500m (3:53.62), Pranka garnered the honor for the second consecutive year in the 400m hurdles (54.84) and Sims received the nod in the pole vault (4.46m).
To be named all-region, an athlete must either have finished in the Top 5 of an individual event or have been part of a Top 3 relay in a region. This is the second year the USTFCCCA has announced all-region honors.
The Generals claimed the ODAC outdoor title this year for the first time since 1988. Strehler will compete at the NCAA Championship in the 10,000m on Thursday at 10:45 am at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
