BOSTON — Senior Mac Strehler (Moseley, Va./Trinity Episcopal School) broke the W&L school record in the 5,000m on Saturday, as the Washington and Lee men's track and field team competed at David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University and the Finn Pincus Invitational hosted by Roanoke.
At the meet in Boston, Strehler finished 21st out of 76 runners, featuring Division I, II and III schools along with running clubs. He crossed the finish line in 14:49.44, crushing the previous W&L record of 15:08.31 set by teammate Ian McDonald (Richmond, Va./Douglas S. Freeman) on December 3, 2014.
Also at the meet, McDonald recorded a season-best time in the 3,000m (8:43.36), and junior MacKenzye Leroy (Port Jervis, N.Y./Port Jervis) notched a career-best time in the mile at 4:20.19.
The rest of the Generals competed at the Finn Pincus Invite on Friday and Saturday. In the pole vault, first-year Shep Sims (Charleston, W.Va./Woodberry Forest School) placed second at 4.34m (5'9.25"). Senior Harrison DeKnight (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) claimed sixth in the high jump at 1.76m (5'9.25").
Sophomore Cooper Baird (Fort Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Country Day) was third in the 800m with a time of 2:00.38. In the 60m hurdles, sophomore Drew Pranka (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) took fifth in 8.83. Sophomore Carter Huffman (Sophia, N.C./South Western Randolph) finished fifth in the 400m (51.11), and senior Jack Jones (Lookout Mountain, Ga./McCallie School) placed sixth in the event in 51.44.
The 4x400m relay claimed sixth with a time of 3:30.94. The quartet consisted of first-years Donovan Fiore (Gilbert, Ariz./Chandler Prep Academy) and Jimmie Johnson (Hoover, Ala./Hoover), Pranka and sophomore Albert Del Cristo (Clarksburg, N.J./Notre Dame).
The Generals will send a select group of competitors to the UCS Invitational at the JDL Fast Track next Saturday.
