LYNCHBURG, Va. — Sophomore Cooper Baird (Fort Worth, Texas/Fort Worth Country Day) took fifth in the 3,000m to lead the Washington and Lee men's track and field team at the Liberty Kickoff on Saturday.
Baird crossed the finish line in a personal-best time of 8:59.54. He was the second-fastest Division III athlete, as the meet also featured Division I and II schools. Sophomore Patrick Hunter (Harrisburg, N.C./Cannon School) crossed the finish line 12th (fifth in D III) in the event with a time of 9:14.46.
The Generals had three runners in the Top 20 in the 1,000m. Senior Ian McDonald (Richmond, Va./Douglas S. Freeman) claimed ninth (second in D III) in 2:34.28, senior Phillip Harmon (Roanoke, Va./Patrick Henry) was 13th (third in D III) at 2:36.42 and senior Jake Roberts (Kansas City, Mo./The Barstow School) placed 16th (fourth in D III) with a time of 2:40.30. Harmon also finished 20th (fifth in D III) in the mile at 4:27.80.
Sophomore Albert Del Cristo (Clarksburg, N.J./Notre Dame) was the top Division III performer (16th overall) in the 500m (1:10.61), and sophomore Drew Pranka (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) took 21st (second in D III) in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.75.
First-year Andrew Creel (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) was in the Top 20 in both throwing events. He claimed 17th (first in D III) in the weight at 11.82m (38'09.50"), and was 19th (second in D III) in the shot with a toss of 12.41m (40'08.75").
Senior Davis Turner (East Point, Ga./The Howard School) finished 14th (first in D III) in the high jump at 1.84m (6'00.50"), and first-year Shep Sims (Charleston, W.Va./Woodberry Forest School) claimed 10th (first in D III) in the pole vault at 4.30m (14'1.25").
The next meet on the schedule for the Generals is the JDL Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. on February 3.
