CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Washington and Lee men's track and field team sent a select group of competitors to the Art and Linda Maillet Open hosted by the University of North Carolina on Saturday, and first-year Shep Sims (Charleston, W.Va./Woodberry Forest School) led the Generals by taking first in the pole vault.
The meet featured mostly Division I and II teams, but Sims was still able to claim the top spot in the pole vault with a leap of 4.40m (14'05.25"). Sophomore Drew Pranka (Princeton, Ill./Princeton) and senior Rob Jones (Albany, N.Y./Albany Academy) tied for second in the event at 3.55m (11'07.75").
Pranka also claimed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.66. In the shot put, first-year Jay Roberts (Whitwell, Tenn./McCallie) placed sixth with a throw of 13.55m (44'05.50"). First-year Andrew Creel (Lynchburg, Va./Brookville) finished 10th in the weight throw at 11.87m (38'11.50").
Senior Harrison DeKnight (Midland Park, N.J./Midland Park) was eighth in the triple jump at 11.98m (39.03.75"), and senior Davis Turner (East Point, Ga./The Howard School) took 10th in the high jump at 1.85m (6'00.75"). Senior Jake Roberts (Kansas City, Mo./The Barstow School) crossed the finish line 13th in the 800m (2:03.90).
The Generals return to action on Friday and Saturday of next week at the Liberty Kickoff.
