FOREST, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's indoor track & field team was picked third out of eight teams in the annual ODAC Men's Indoor Track Coaches Poll as announced by the conference on Monday.
Lynchburg College topped the poll, with 49 points and 7-of-8 first-place votes. Bridgewater was tabbed second with 41 points and received the final first-place vote. W&L came in with 35 points and was followed by Guilford (29), Virginia Wesleyan (28), Roanoke (19), league newcomer Shenandoah (14) and Eastern Mennonite (9).
W&L placed second at last season's indoor championship meet, the team's best finish since 1993.
Headlining the returnees for the Generals are seniors Tyler Grant (Suwanee, Ga./South Forsyth) and Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan), and sophomores Zander Tallman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood), Dillon Myers (Foxborough, Mass./Foxborough) and Kane Thomas (Seattle, Wash./Shorewood).
Tallman is the reigning ODAC Indoor Champion in the 200m (23.02), 400m (50.61) and he anchored the winning 4x400m relay team (3:25.55). He was named the 2011 ODAC Athlete of the Meet and the 2011 ODAC Rookie of the Year for his efforts.
Thomas returns as the defending champion in the 800m (1:58.91) and he was also a member of the winning 4x400m relay team.
Myers earned Second Team All-ODAC honors with a second-place finish in the 400m (50.87) and honorable mention all-conference accolades with a third-place finish in the high jump (1.83m) at the conference meet. Additionally, he also ran a leg on the winning 4x400m relay.
Grant was the final piece of the winning 4x400m relay team and Gossett returns after earning honorable mention all-conference laurels with a third-place finish in the mile (4:24.88).
W&L opened its season in the two-day Liberty Kickoff on Friday and Saturday and will return to action on January 14, when they take part in the Marietta Open.
