NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's track and field teams have both been honored by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as 2011 All-Academic Teams.
The Generals' men's team, which accrued a team GPA of 3.28, placed second at both the indoor and outdoor ODAC Championships this past year, and also claimed the Indoor Athlete of the Meet and Rookie of the Year in first-year Zander Tallman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Cranbrook Kingswood). W&L's second-place finish at the indoor meet was the team's best since 1993. The Generals were one of 64 teams honored across all of Division III.
The women's team posted an overall team GPA of 3.37 and was one of 111 teams to earn All-Academic status. W&L finished in third place at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships led by sophomore Marissa Thompson (Chatham, Va./Chatham), who set four new school records over the course of the year and became the first W&L woman to win the 100m at the outdoor championships.
To be recognized by the USTFCCCA, a team must accumulate a team GPA of at least 3.10 in the winter term.
