FOREST, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference has announced its 2011 ODAC/StellarOne Sportsmanship Teams in each of the five winter sports that it sponsors.
For Washington and Lee, seniors Katherine Fenwick (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and Allie Long (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings), junior Will Smith (Lothian, Md./Severn), and sophomores Brian Palmer (Washington, D.C./St. Alban's) and Kelly Mae Ross (Endicott, N.Y./Maine-Endwell) were all honored in their respective sports.
Fenwick, a three-year member of the indoor track & field team and a four-year member of the cross country team, recently earned All-ODAC honors for her third-place finish in the 5000m (19:20.72) at the indoor conference championships. She also earned All-ODAC honors as a member of the distance medley relay team that finished second in 13:24.95.
Long, a women's basketball honoree, started all 27 games this season for the Generals, who set a school record in wins with a 19-8 overall record. She averaged 8.7 points per game and set a new school record with a league-high 45.8 percent (66-144) mark from three-point range. Additionally, her seven made triples in a game against Hollins this year set a new W&L single-game mark.
Smith saw action in 16 games for the men's basketball team this winter as the Generals finished their fourth-straight winning season with a 14-13 mark. He posted season-highs of seven points and three rebounds in a 73-59 loss to Roanoke College.
Palmer, the men's track & field recipient, ran a season-best time of 2:19.92 in the 800m at the Indoor ODAC Championships.
Ross, the women's swimming honoree, also earned the Bonnie Kestner Sportsmanship Award following the ODAC Championship Meet. She recorded four Top 10 finishes at the meet, including a second-place finish as part of the 800 free relay (8:06.89).
"Each one of the honorees has been selected by the coaches in recognition of their conduct in the arena," explained ODAC Commissioner Brad Bankston. " My hat is off to these student-athletes - thanking them for the example they set for all of us."
