W&L Indoor Track & Field Competes at Liberty Open
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s and
women’s indoor track & field teams both had selected
athletes competing over the weekend against Division I and Division
III competition at the Liberty University Open.
Senior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John’s)
headlined the performances for the W&L women by placing second
among Division III athletes in the pentathlon with a total of 2,681
points. Armstrong completed the 60 meter hurdles in 10.58 seconds,
high jumped 1.39 meters, tossed the shot put 9.68 meters, long
jumped 4.47 meters and finished the 800 meters in 2:34.13
seconds.
First-year Marissa Thompson (Chatham, Va./Chatham) also had an
outstanding performance for the women, finishing second among
Division III competitors in the 200 meters with a time of 28.25
seconds.
The W&L men were paced by sophomore Tyler Grant’s
(Suwanee, Ga./South Forsyth) school record-setting performance in
the heptathlon that saw him finish first among Division III
athletes. He totaled 4,020 points over the two-day competition,
finishing the 60 meters in 7.56 seconds, leaping 5.72 meters in the
long jump, tossing the shot put 10.18 meters and high jumping 1.71
meters. Grant also finished the 60 meter hurdles in 9.36 seconds,
pole vaulted 2.95 meters and he covered the 1000 meters in 2:52.69
seconds.
First-year Steven Collieu (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena)
also finished first among Division III runners in the 400 meters
with a time of 52.94 seconds.
The Generals will return to action on Saturday, when they compete
in the VMI relays beginning at 9:00 am.
