W&L Men's and Women's T&F Teams Notch 10 Top 5 Finishes at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s track & field teams recorded two school records and 10 Top 5 finishes competing against NCAA Division I, II and III schools at the Liberty Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

On the women’s side, W&L broke a pair of school records as sophomore Natalie Stier (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) took first overall in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.19. The Generals’ other school record came from first-year Marissa Thompson (Chatham, Va./Chatham), as she finished third among Div. III competitors in the 100 meters with a time of 12.70.

Other highlights for the women came from first-year Laurn Schultz (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton), who finished fifth overall in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:07.63. Thompson also finished second in Div. III in the long jump with a mark of 4.71 meters and third among Div. III in the triple jump with a distance of 10.51 meters. First-year Rachel Mensch (Edina, Minn./Edina) finished second in Div. III in the 800 meters with a time of 2:28.69.

Seniors Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John’s) and Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy) also notched top finishes as Armstrong took third in Div. III in the javelin (27.12 meters) and Sutherland took second in Div. III in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 16.19.

On the men’s side, senior Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Giilman) took third overall in the high jump with a mark of 1.94 meters and sophomore Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan) took second in Div. III in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:14.55.

Sophomore Tyler Grant (Suwanee, Ga./South Forsyth) took second among Div. III competitors in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.00, senior Sean Hurdiss (Missouri City, Texas/Elkins) finished third among Div. III in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.37, senior Tom Brandein (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) finished second in Div. III in the 400 hurdles with a time of 59.35 and first-year Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum) was third in Div. III in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.29.

The Generals return to action on Apr. 17, at the Moravian Greyhound Invitational beginning at 10:30 am.
