W&L Track and Field Competes in 2010 ODAC Championship
BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s and
women’s outdoor track and field teams competed in the 2010
Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship on Friday and
Saturday at Bridgewater College. The Generals claimed 10 All-ODAC
citations, five individual champions and three school records in
addition to first-year Lauren Schultz (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton)
being named ODAC Rookie of the Year.
The men finished in fifth place with 54.50 points, while the women finished in fourth place with 89 points. Lynchburg College claimed the men’s championship with 225 points, and was followed by Bridgewater (102), Virginia Wesleyan (77), Roanoke (71.50), W&L (54.50), Eastern Mennonite (30) and Guilford (29). Roanoke took the women’s championship with 205 points, followed by Lynchburg (154.50), Bridgewater (110), W&L (89), Virginia Wesleyan (14.50), Eastern Mennonite (12) and Guilford (2).
The women were paced by senior Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge), who notched two first-place finishes. Telfeyan finished the 1500 meters in a personal best time of 4:47.71 before crossing the finish line in 18:40.87 in the 5000 meters. Schultz led the field in the 3000 meter steeplechase, finishing in a time of 12:07.44 while finishing second in the 5000 meters (18:53.81) and earning Rookie of the Year honors. Sophomore Natalie Stier (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) was the other W&L top finisher, as she set a school and ODAC meet record in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.45.
First-year Marissa Thompson (Chatham, Va./Chatham) claimed a school record while finishing fifth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.65. She also finished the 200 meter dash in a time of 26.37, good for fifth place and was a member of the fourth-place 4x100 relay (51.17) and 4x400 relay (4:17.51. She was joined on both relay squads by senior Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley Academy), senior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John’s) and Stier.
Senior Sarah Keckler (Gardners, Pa./Home Schooled), first-year Rachel Urban (Opelousas, La./Sacred Heart), Armstrong and Sutherland were the other multiple-event winners for the Generals during the meet. Keckler took third place in the 3000 meter steeplechase (12:11.90) and sixth in the 5000 meters (19:13.80). Urban finished in the top six in two field events, claiming fourth in the discus with a toss of 34.13 meters and sixth in the javelin (33.54 meters). In addition to being on two winning relays, Armstrong also finished sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (1:10.11) and shot put (10.74 meters), while Sutherland took fifth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.53.
Also scoring for W&L was first-year Taylor Maxey (Poway, Calif./The Bishop’s School) finishing third in the discus (36.75 meters), a fourth-place finish from first-year Molly Ortiz (Ketchikan, Alaska/Ketchikan) in the 3000 meter steeplechase (14:22.24), and sixth-place finishes from sophomore Emily TenEyck (Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) in the pole vault (2.13 meters), first-year Rachel Mensch (Edina, Minn./Edina) in the 1500 meters (5:16.85) and sophomore Kathryn Iwata (Pasadena, Calif./Flintridge Prep) in the 3000 meter steeplechase (14:22.24).
On the men’s side, first-year Dylan Mills (Mobile, Ala./St. Paul’s) won the javelin with a school-record toss of 52.82 meters. Sophomore Tyler Grant (Suwanee, Ga./South Forsyth) placed in the top six in three events, including second in the 400 meter hurdles (56.01), third in the javelin (49.08 meters) and sixth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.17). Grant was also a member of the 4x400 relay that finished fifth with a time of 3:30.44 and the 4x100 relay that took fourth in a time of 43.77. He was joined on both relay squads by senior Tom Brandlein (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan), senior Sean Hurdiss (Missouri City, Texas/Elkins) and first-year Steven Collieu (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena). In addition to participating in two relays, Hurdiss notched two fourth place finishes in the meet in the 100 meter dash (11.15) and 200 meter dash (22.79). Collieu finished fifth in the 400 meter dash with a time of 51.23, while Brandelin finished fourth in the 400 meter hurdles (57.63).
Other scorers for the Generals included senior Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman) taking fourth in the high jump (1.93 meters), junior Rob George (Middleton, N.J./Middleton) claiming the fifth spot in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:32.54 and sixth-place finishes from first-years AJ Dowers (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) in the discus (38.15 meters) and Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum) in the 800 meter run (1:58.97), junior David Doobin (Summit, N.J./Newark Academy) in the high jump (1.83 meters) and sophomore Robert Warneford-Thompson (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) in the 3000 meter steeplechase (11:01.93).
The Generals return to action on Thursday as they take part in the Liberty Twilight meet.
