SALEM, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s track & field teams opened their outdoor season with a strong performance at the Roanoke Maroons Invitational. The Generals recorded 24 Top 5 finishes, including six winning performances.
Highlights on the men’s side included first-year Steven Collieu (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) winning the 400 meters with a time of 51.59 and senior Ben Goetsch (Timonium, Md./Gilman) capturing the high jump with a mark of 1.92 meters.
The men’s team recorded two other winning times, as sophomore Robert Warneford-Thomson (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) captured the 1,500 meters in 1:16.16 and sophomore Tyler Grant (Suwanee, Ga./South Forsyth) won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 57.80.
Other top finishes included first-year Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum) taking second in the 400 meters with a time of 52.87 and sophomore Matt Gossett (Atlanta, Ga./Wesleyan) taking second in the 800 meters in 1:57.60.
On the women’s side, the Generals received a pair of winning performances as senior Sallie Armstrong (Houtson, Texas/St. John’s) won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:12.01 and first-year Taylor Maxey (Poway, Calif./The Bishop’s School) took first in the discus with a distance of 35.68 meters.
Also for the women, sophomore Natalie Stier (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) took second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:00.93, first-year Rachel Mensch (Edina, Minn./Edina) took second in the 800 meters, finishing in 2:26.08. First-year Lauren Schultz (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) also recorded a second-place finish in the 1,500 meters with a time of 5:11.71.
First-year Marissa Thompson (Chatham, Va./Chatham) notched a pair of third-place finishes as she recorded a school-record time of 12.83 in the 100 meters, as well as a mark of 4.97 meters in the long jump.
Both the men’s and women’s teams return to action on Friday when they compete on day one of the W&L Carnival beginning at 1:00 pm.
