W&L Men's and Women's Indoor Track Teams in Action at VMI
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and
women’s indoor track teams were in action at the VMI Winter
Relays on Saturday at the Cormack Field House.
What was originally scheduled as a multi-team event, ended up as a
dual meet between W&L and VMI as the weather forced the other
competing teams to cancel.
The women’s team was led senior Maggie Sutherland
(Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley), who notched a pair of first-place
finishes. She took top honors in the high jump with a mark of 1.50
meters as well as taking first in the 55 meter hurdles with a time
of 9.53 seconds.
Senior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John’s) and
first-year Marissa Thompson (Chatham, Va./Chatham) also garnered
first-place finishes, as Armstrong took the shot put with a heave
of 10.62 meters and Thompson finished first in the 55 meter dash
with a time of 7.52 seconds.
Other top finishers for the women included senior Kat Telfeyan
(Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge)), who took second in the mile with a
time of 5:37.11 and junior Ashley Carr (Tallahassee, Fla./Maclay
School), who posted a time of 2:37.54 in the 800 meters to earn a
second-place finish.
On the men’s side, W&L was paced by junior David Doobin
(Summit, N.J./Newark Academy), who tallied a pair of runner-up
finishes, taking second in the high jump (1.89 meters) as well as
the triple jump (11.74 meters).
Sophomore Tyler Grant (Suwanee, Ga./South Forsyth) took first
place in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.63 seconds and he
also earned a second-place finish in the pole vault, clearing 3.20
meters.
Sophomore Robert Warneford-Thomson (Richmond, Va./Trinity
Episcopal) finished third in the mile with a time of 4:42.14 and
first-year Steven Collieu (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena)
finished fourth in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.12
seconds.
The Generals return to action on Saturday as they will compete at
the Susquehanna Indoor Invitational.
