ODAC Releases Indoor Track and Field Coaches Polls
SALEM, Va. -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference released its preseason coaches poll for men’s and women’s indoor track and field on Friday and the W&L men’s and women’s teams were both picked to finish in third place.
The W&L men’s team, which finished in third place at the championship meet a season ago, totaled 35 points and the women’s team, coming off of its first-ever indoor title a season ago, garnered 38 points with one first-place vote. Lynchburg was picked first in each poll.
Among the top the returnees for the W&L women are senior Maggie Sutherland (Pittsburgh, Pa./Sewickley), who finished second in the high jump (1.53 meters), fourth in the triple jump (10.37 meters) and was a member of the 4x400 meter relay team that captured third place (4:08.83) at the championship meet last season. Also returning is senior Sallie Armstrong (Houston, Texas/St. John’s), who was also a member of the 4x400 meter relay team and she also captured third place in the shot put. (10.64 meters)
Senior Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and junior Katherine Fenwick (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) will look to anchor the mid-distance events. Telfeyan recently competed in the NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championships, while Fenwick was a member of last season’s distance medley relay team that took third place at the indoor championships (13:22.13).
The men’s team will be led by senior Ryan Castle (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville), who finished in second place in the high jump (1.90 meters) at last season’s championship meet. Castle and sophomore Tyler Grant (Sewanee, Ga./South Forsyth) were also members of the third-place finishing 4x400 meter relay team that finished in 3:32.38. Senior Davis Franklin (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) returns after helping W&L set a school and championship record time of 10:39.21 in the distance medley relay.
The W&L men’s team opens its season at Marietta First Glimpse meet on Saturday at 12:00 pm.
