SELINSGROVE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men’s and women’s indoor track teams opened their 2009-10 season in earnest on Saturday as they took part in the 2010 Susquehanna Orange and Maroon Classic at the James W. Garrett Sports Complex.
On the men’s side, the Generals were led by sophomore Tyler Grant (Suwanee, Ga./South Forsyth), as he recorded a par of Top 10 individual finishes and was a member of the 4x400 meter relay team that captured third place. Grant recorded a time of 52.88 in the 400 meters en route to a fifth-place finish. He also cleared 1.73 meters in the high jump for an eighth-place finish.
Grant was joined on the 4x400 meter relay team by senior Sean Hurdiss (Missouri, City, Texas/Elkins), first-year Steven Collieu (South Pasadena, Calif./South Pasadena) and senior Tom Brandlein (Manalapan, N.J./Manalapan) as the foursome captured third place overall. Finishing time was not immediately available.
Other top finishers for the men included first-year Harrison Tucker (Richmond, Va./St. Christopher’s), as he captured 16th in the mile with a time of 4:41.35 and Hurdiss, who garnered a pair of Top 20 places with an 19th-place finish in the 55 meter dash (7.00) and an 18th-place finish in the 200 meters with a mark of 24.46.
On the women’s side, first-year Lauren Schultz (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) notched a pair of Top 10 finishes to lead W&L. Schultz ran 19:36.33 to take sixth in the 5,000 meters and followed that up with a seventh-place finish in the mile (5:42.03).
Sophomore Natalie Stier (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) recorded a pair of 11th-place finishes as she recorded a time of 9.79 in the 55 meter hurdles and 7.87 in the 55 meter dash. First-year Marissa Thompson (Chatham, Va./Chatham) took fifth overall in the 55 meter dash with a time of 7.66 and senior Sarah Keckler (Gardners, Pa./Home Schooled) was clocked in 20:23.00 in the 5,000 meters for a 12th-place finish.
The Generals return to action next Saturday at the Liberty Open and Multi’s beginning at 8:30 am.
