In his 14 seasons in charge of the men's tennis program, Detwiler has engineered some of the finest seasons in school history. He has directed the Generals to a 203-76 cumulative record, 12 Old Dominion Athletic Conference titles and 12 trips to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Additionally, his teams have consistently ranked in the Division III Top 25 polls.
Detwiler's 2007 team set a school record for victories in a season by going 20-3 overall, claiming the ODAC Tournament Championship and receiving a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament. His 2008 team went 18-5 overall, won the conference title and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In 2012, he guided the Generals to a 16-5 mark, another ODAC crown and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. His 2013 club finished with an 18-6 overall record and fell in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
In his time as an assistant women's tennis coach with the Generals, Detwiler helped lead W&L to a pair of ODAC titles and NCAA Tournament berths.
Before arriving at W&L, Detwiler spent eight years as the Tennis Director at Shadow Oaks Racquet Club in Greenville, S.C. He is a 1988 graduate of Furman University, where he was a four-year letterwinner and team captain as a senior. Detwiler won two Southern Conference singles titles and three doubles titles, while helping the team to a pair of league championships. He also won the USTA National 25-and-under clay court doubles championship in 1993.
Well respected in the tennis coaching profession, Detwiler was presented with the 2003 USTA/ITA Community Service Award for the Mid-Atlantic Region for his work with the Lexington and W&L Communities through the Duchossois Tennis Center.
