FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team had a successful first day at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional hosted by Mary Washington on Saturday.
The Generals advanced two singles players and two doubles teams to the Round of 16 by by virtue of their play on Saturday.
Shamshiri opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Swarthmore's Dan Park and then posted a 6-4, 6-3 win over Chris Jou of Johns Hopkins. He will face third-seeded Tyler Carey of Mary Washington in the Round of 16.
Holt posted a 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over ninth-seeded Emerson Walsh of Johns Hopkins in his first match, and then knocked off Steven Boslett of Christopher Newport, 6-3, 7-6. He'll square off with fifth-seeded Abhishek Alla of Carnegie-Mellon in the Round of 16.
In doubles, the teams of Holt and Shamshiri and sophomores Thomas Johnson (Greenville, S.C. / Christ Church Episcopal) and Brian Krouskos (Alpharetta, Ga. / Mount Pisgah Christian) all advanced to the Round of 16.
The top seed, Holt and Shamshiri received an opening round bye, before recording an 8-1 win over Chris Jou and Jeffrey McKenzie of Johns Hopkins. The tandem will face Andrew Gear and Mark Haresty of St. Mary's in the Round of 16 on Sunday.
Johnson and Krouskos began their day with an 8-5 win over Joel Lankford and Julian Pearlman of Carnegie-Mellon then posted an 8-2 win over ninth-seeded Daniel Albers and Eric Spangler of Salisbury. They will face sixth-seeded Mike Buxbaum and Emerson Walsh of Johns Hopkins in the Round of 16.
