FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team completed its competition in the Mary Washington Kickoff Classic on Sunday.
The Generals claimed two singles wins on the day as sophomore Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) defeated Evan Charles of Mary Washington, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 and sophomore Thomas Johnson (Greenville, S.C. / Christ Church Episcopal) downed Panayot Kusidi of North Carolina Wesleyan, 6-3, 6-4.
In doubles, the tandem of Holt and junior Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas / ATA College Prep) went 2-0 for the day and 3-0 for the tournament. On Sunday, they began with an 8-3 victory over a Mary Washington team, before posting an 8-6 win over a team from North Carolina Wesleyan.
The team of sophomores John Kirby (Jacksonville, Fla. / Stanton College Prep) and Robert Eckstein (New Orleans, La. / Isidore Newman) and the tandem of sophomore Brian Krouskos (Alpharetta, Ga. / Mount Pisgah Christian) and first-year Jordan Krasner (Rockville, Md. / Walter Johnson) both went 1-1 on Sunday and finished the tournament 2-1 overall.
Kirby and Eckstein opened with an 8-4 win over a team from North Carolina Wesleyan, before falling to a team from George Mason, 8-3. Krouskos and Krasner fell to a Mary Washington duo, 8-5, and then knocked off another team from Mary Washington, 8-5.
Washington and Lee returns to action on September 28-30 as it participates in the ITA Southeast Regional also hosted by Mary Washington.
