Three Generals Earn ODAC Weekly Honors
FOREST, Va. – Three Washington and Lee student-athletes have been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week in their respective sports for the week ending March 3.
Sophomores Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas / ATA College Prep) and Sonja Meighan (McLean, Va. / Flint Hill) were named the ODAC Men's and Women's Tennis Player of the Week, while first-year Teddy Corcoran (Rochester, N.Y. / Brighton) was honored as the ODAC Men's Golfer of the Week.
Shamshiri helped lead the W&L men's tennis team to a 3-0 week by compiling a 2-0 record in singles and a 2-0 mark in doubles. He posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles and teamed with first-year Michael Holt (Henrico, Va. / Mills Godwin) to win 8-3 at No. 1 doubles in a 7-2 win over Roanoke on Thursday. He then notched a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles and teamed with Holt for an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles in a 9-0 victory over Guilford on Saturday.
For the season, Shamshiri has registered a 7-9 singles record and an 11-4 doubles mark.
The Washington and Lee men's tennis team has a 5-2 overall record and a 3-0 mark in conference play. The 20th-ranked Generals return to action on March 15 when they host both Randolph-Macon (4:00 pm) and Virginia Wesleyan (7:00 pm).
Meighan posted a 5-1 combined record last week as the Generals placed sixth at the ITA Division III Indoor Team Championships. She finished 2-1 overall at No. 1 singles and 3-0 at Nos. 1-2 doubles while teaming with classmate Patricia Kirkland (Charleston, S.C. / Ashley Hall). The 17th-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South Region, Meighan knocked off the No. 4 player in the West Region by a score of 6-2, 6-1 and beat the No. 12 player in the East Region, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Her lone loss was to the No. 8 player in the Central Region, falling 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
The seventh-ranked Generals (3-2, 1-0) return to action on Saturday when they host Hollins for a 1:00 pm match.
Corcoran recorded his first collegiate victory when he took medalist honors at the Guilford Pine Needles Invitational on Monday in Southern Pines, N.C. Corcoran fired a -2 score of 69 in the opening round to win by one stroke after the second round was cancelled due to weather. His scored helped the Generals place second overall at the event.
Corcoran has played 10 rounds this season and has posted a 76.1 scoring average, second-best on the team.
Washington and Lee will continue its spring season on March 11-12 when it participates in the Taylor Made Adidas Intercollegiate hosted by Ohio Wesleyan in Dataw Island, S.C.
