FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's tennis team was in action on Saturday at the USTA/ITA Southeast Region Championships hosted by Mary Washington.
In the opening day of action, the Generals advanced one singles player to the Round of 16 and one doubles team to the quarterfinals.
In championship draw singles action, senior Hayden White (Baltimore, Md./Towson) notched a pair of victories to advance to the Round of 16 where he will face Mary Washington's Evan Charles on Sunday. White opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Haverford's Matt Romei and then knocked off Salisbury's Eric Spangler, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
In other singles action, first-year Robert Eckstein (New Orleans, La./Isidore Newman) won his opening match over Muhlenberg's Daniel Lakhman, 6-1, 6-3. He then fell to Duke Miller of Carnegie Mellon in the second round, 6-1, 6-2.
The team of first-year Michael Holt (Henrico, Va./Mills Godwin) and sophomore Taylor Shamshiri (Austin, Texas/ATA College Prep) are still alive in the championship doubles draw after going 2-0 on Saturday. They defeated the Johns Hopkins tandem of Nick Garcia and Noah Joachim, 8-5, in the opener, then knocked off Brandon Larson and Evan Stack of Bridgewater, 8-0. Holt and Shamshiri will face the Carnegie Mellon pair of Will Duncan and Duke Miller in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
The team of White and sophomore Christopher Hu (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) won their opening match over Alex Blakhin and David Lunding-Johansson of Mary Washington, 8-4, but lost in the second round to Andy Hersh and Jeff Kamel of Johns Hopkins, 8-6.
