LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s tennis team claimed the championship of three of the four singles flights as it hosted the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Singles Championships at the W&L Courts over the weekend.
At the No. 2 singles bracket, sophomore Michael Freeman (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) went 4-0 for the weekend to claim the title. Freeman knocked off sophomore teammate Jonathan Gaffney (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Xavier) in the finals by a score of 6-3, 6-2.
At No. 3 singles, junior Will Hall (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) emerged victorious after posting a 4-0 ledger. Hall claimed the title with a 6-1, 6-1 win over junior teammate Tad Hatcher (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) in the final match.
The fourth singles flight also featured an all W&L matchup in the finale. Sophomore Brian Roberts (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) defeated junior Morgan Hopson (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas) in the championship match by a score of 6-2, 6-2 to finish the weekend with a 4-0 record.
At No. 1 singles, W&L first-year Hayden White (Baltimore, Md./Towson) went 3-1 for the tournament. White advanced to the finals, but fell to Hampden-Sydney’s Will Moss, the 2009 ODAC Player of the Year, by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Washington and Lee will return to action on Oct. 3-5 as it participates in the ITA Regional Championships hosted by Mary Washington.
