W&L Men's Tennis Competes at ITA Region Championships

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Washington and Lee first-year Hayden White (Baltimore, Md./Towson) has advanced to the Round of 16 of the championship singles flight at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III South/Southeast Region Championships hosted by Mary Washington on Saturday.

White opened the event by defeating Harsha Rao of Carnegie Mellon, 6-2, 6-1, then knocked off Johns Hopkins’ Michael Chang in the Round of 32 by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

White was the lone General to advance to the Round of 16 in singles. Juniors Tim Watson (White Stone, Va./Landon) and Will Hall (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) and sophomore Michael Freeman (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) all won their opening matches, but fell in the Round of 32.

In the championship doubles bracket, the duo of senior Alex Brooke (Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) and Watson and the team comprised of senior Cliff Gaddy (Gulfport, Miss./Gulfport) and junior Tadd Hatcher (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) both won their openers before dropping their matches in the Round of 16.

White will continue play on Sunday morning in the championship singles bracket with his match in the Round of 16.
