HAYES AND RITTER COMPETE IN FINAL DAY OF COMPETITION AT NCAA DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIPS (3/17)

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Washington and Lee senior Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) placed 15th in the preliminaries of the 200 Butterfly event with a time of 1:54.07, while freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) finished in 24th place in the 200 Backstroke (1:57.37) in the final day of competition at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Flickinger Aquatic Center in Buffalo, N.Y.

Hayes was the 15th seed for the evening's consolation finals of the 200 Butterfly and finished 13th with a time of 1:53.90. Both Hayes and Ritter have now completed their three events in the national meet.

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Washington and Lee senior Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) placed 13th in the 100 Butterfly (50.88) and freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) placed 17th in the 100 Backstroke (52.98) in Friday's prelimary round at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships.

Hayes' time qualified him for the consolation finals of the 100 Butterfly in which he placed 15th with a time of 51.24 in the evening session.

Both will be competing on Saturday as Hayes will suit up for the 200 Butterfly and Ritter will compete in the 200 Backstroke.

HAYES AND RITTER COMPETE IN DAY ONE OF NCAA DIVISION III CHAMPIONSHIPS (3/15)

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Washington and Lee senior Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) placed 39th in the 200 IM (1:58.72) and freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) finished 40th in the 50 Freestyle (22.39) in the first day of competition at the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships at the Flickinger Aquatic Center in Buffalo, N.Y., on Thursday afternoon.

Sandres Boon of Kenyon College took first-place honors in the 200 IM in a time of 1:50.81, while Kenyon's Lloyd Baron placed first in the 50 Freestyle (20.34).

Both competitors will swim in two more events over the weekend. Hayes will compete in the 100 and 200 Butterfly events, while Ritter will swim the 100 and 200 Backstroke events.

W&L WOMEN'S SWIMMING WINS ODAC CHAMPIONSHIP (2/18)

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's swimming team won the ODAC Championship at the ODAC/Atlantic States Invitational on Sunday evening at the Dedmond Center in Radford, Va.

Sophomore Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) was named ODAC Swimmer of the Year and Atlantic States Swimmer of the Meet after winning seven events in the three-day invitational. She claimed her seventh victory on Sunday, taking first-place honors in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:15.33.

Sophomore Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles) also picked up a first-place finish in the 100 Freestyle (55.36), while freshman Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) placed second in the 200 Backstroke (2:16.82).

In the ODAC standings, Sweet Briar College finished in second place, while Randolph-Macon followed in third.

W&L MENÍS SWIMMING PLACES SECOND AT GROVE CITY INVITE (2/17)

The Washington and Lee men's swimming team finished the three-day Grove City Invitational in second place with 651 points on Saturday evening in Grove City, Pa.

Division II Westminster (Pa.) won the meet, finishing with 750 points.

Senior Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) led the way for W&L with a first-place finish in the 200 Butterfly in a meet- and pool-record time of 1:53.17. The time also qualifies for the NCAA ñAî cut.

Freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) placed second in the 200 Backstroke with an NCAA ñBî cut qualifying time of 1:54.99, while the W&L 400 Freestyle Relay team also finished second (3:11.32).

The Generals will return to action on Mar. 15-17, as they compete in the NCAA Championships.

W&L WOMEN'S SWIMMING LEADS AFTER DAY TWO OF ODAC/ATLANTIC STATES MEET (2/17)

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's swimming team finished day two of the ODAC/Atlantic States Invitational in first place with 437 points on Saturday evening at the Dedmond Center in Radford, Va.

Sophomore Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) picked up three wins for the second consecutive day for Washington and Lee. She won the 400 IM in a ODAC- and meet-record time of 4:44.69, which qualifies for the NCAA "B" cut. She also teamed with sophomores Katie Kolle (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) and Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles), and freshman Mandi Kimble (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day School) to win the 200 Medley Relay (1:57.31). Huffman, Kolle, Kimble and freshman Jackie Green (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) placed first in the 800 Freestyle Relay in a time of 8:22.18.

Austin also placed second in the 200 Freestyle (2:02.23), while Kimble achieved a season-best mark of 1:02.68 with her second-place finish in the 100 Backstroke.

Randolph-Macon is in second place after the second day of competition with 273 points, while Appalachian State sits in third with 262 points.

The final day of swimming action will get underway tomorrow afternoon.

W&L MEN'S SWIMMING BREAKS RECORDS IN DAY TWO OF GROVE CITY INVITE (2/16)

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men's swimming team set two school records on Friday evening and is in second place after day two of the Grove City Invitational in Grove City, Pa.

The 200 Medley Relay team of seniors Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and Mike Miraglia (Rockville, Md./Rockville), sophomore Brett Burns (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) and freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) broke a 12-year old school record with their win in a time of 1:36.59.

Ritter set his second school record of the day in the 100 Backstroke, placing second and improving upon his NCAA "B" cut qualifying time at 52.14.

Hayes also placed first in the 100 Butterfly, setting pool and meet records with a time of 50.58. The time qualifies Hayes for the NCAA "B" cut and was five one-hundredths of a second shy of the school record.

Hayes and Ritter also teamed with sophomore Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) and freshman Jonathan James (Covington, La./Covington) to win the 800 Freestyle Relay in a pool- and meet-record time of 7:01.79. Hayes finished the first leg in 1:45.30, while Ritter (1:44.60), James (1:46.40) and Frankfort (1:45.45) brought home the victory.

Frankfort also took his second victory of the day in the 200 Freestyle, finishing in a time of 1:45.31.

The Generals trail Division II Westminster (Pa.) in the standings after the second day of competition. The Titans lead with 517 points, while W&L is close behind in second with 449 points.

The final day of swimming action gets underway tomorrow afternoon.

W&L WOMEN'S SWIMMING LEADS AFTER DAY ONE OF ODAC/ATLANTIC STATES MEET (2/16)

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's swimming team finished day one of the ODAC/Atlantic States Invitational in first place with 192 points on Friday evening at the Dedmond Center in Radford, Va.

Leading the way were sophomores Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) and Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles), who each picked up three wins on the day.

The duo combined with sophomore Katie Kolle (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) and freshman Jackie Green (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) to win the 200 Freestyle Relay, and then teamed with sophomores Michelle Moore (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) and Jen Fallon (Boerne, Texas/Boerne) to place first in the 400 Medley Relay.

Huffman also won the 200 IM in a time of 2:16.94, while Austin placed first in the 50 Freestyle (25.50).

Randolph-Macon is currently in second place in the competition with 134 points.

The Generals (7-7, 4-0 ODAC) will begin day two of the three-day invitational tomorrow afternoon.

W&L MEN'S SWIMMING IN SECOND PLACE AFTER DAY ONE OF GROVE CITY INVITE (2/15)

GROVE CITY, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men's swimming team finished day one of the Grove City Invitational in second place out of nine teams with 179 points on Thursday evening in Grove City, Pa.

The 400 medley relay team of seniors Mike Miraglia (Rockville, Md./Rockville) and Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), sophomore Zach Fake (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) and freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) placed first in a school- and meet-record time of 3:30.18.

Hayes picked up his second win of the day in the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.56.

Sophomore Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) placed second in the 500 Freestyle (4:43.40), while Ritter and Fake teamed up in the 200 Freestyle Relay with junior Rick Black (Indiana, Pa./Marion Center), sophomore Brett Burns (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) to take second place in 1:27.37.

Westminster (Pa.) leads after day one with 238 points.

Washington and Lee (8-2) will return to action in day two of the three-day invitational tomorrow morning at 11:00 am.

W&L WOMEN'S SWIMMING SWEEPS DUAL MEET WITH RADFORD AND HOLLINS (2/1)

RADFORD, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's swimming team defeated both Radford, 82-36, and ODAC opponent Hollins, 77-43, in a dual meet on Thursday evening in Radford, Va.

The win over Hollins gave Washington and Lee the regular-season ODAC title with a perfect 4-0 record.

Leading the way for the Generals was senior co-captain Allison Harvey (Manassas, Va./Stonewell Jackson), who placed first in the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle events.

Sophomores Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) and Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles) also captured two victories each. Huffman won the 200-yard Backstroke and 200-yard Breastroke, while Austin placed first in the 100-yard and 200-yard Freestyle events.

Freshman K.C. Wilson (Pinedale, Wyo./Pinedale) also took home first place honors in the 200-yard Butterfly.

Washington and Lee (7-7, 4-0) will next be in action on Friday, Feb. 16, as it competes in the annual ODAC/Atlantic States Invitational.

W&L SWIMMING SPLITS WITH MARY WASHINGTON (1/27)

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams split a dual meet on Saturday afternoon at Mary Washington College in Fredericskburg, Va. The W&L men improved to 8-2 with a 110.5-94.5 victory over Mary Washington, while the women's squad fell to the Eagles, 105-75.

The men's team set three meet records in the victory, which was led by a pair of seniors in Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and Mike Miraglia (Rockville, Md./Rockville). Hayes set a meet-record when he tied for first place in the 100-yard Butterfly in a time of 52.37. Miraglia also set a meet record with his win in the 100-yard Breastroke (1:01.93). Freshman Colin Mitchell (Alberta, Canada/Springbank) placed first in the 100-yard Backstroke, posting a meet-record time of 55.94.

The Washington and Lee women (5-7) were paced by sophomore Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles), who placed first in the 100-yard Freestyle (56.26). Sophomore Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) also took home first place in the 500-yard Freestyle in a time of 5:37.70.

The W&L men will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 15, as they travel to Grove City, Pa., for the annual Grove City Invitational. The women's squad will travel to Radford, Va., on Thursday, Feb. 1, to take on Radford and Hollins.

W&L SWIMMING SWEEPS MARYMOUNT (1/27)

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams swept a dual meet from Marymount in swimming action on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, Va. The men's squad dropped the Saints, 141-34, while the women's squad defeated Marymount, 106-58.

Leading the way for the W&L men's squad (7-2) was freshman Jonathan James (Covington, La./Covington) who picked up victories in the 100-yard (50.09) and 200-yard Freestyle (1:49.84). The winning time in the 200 Freestyle was a meet record. Freshman Colin Mitchell (Alberta, Canada/Springbank) also collected a win in the 100-yard Backstroke in a meet-record time of 57.00.

On the women's side, sophomore Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles) placed first in the 100-yard Freestyle (56.53), while freshman Jackie Green (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) took home first place in the 500-yard Freestyle in a time of 5:52.00 for the Generals (5-6).

Both squads return to action this afternoon at 5:00 pm when they will take on Mary Washington.

W&L WOMEN'S SWIMMING DEFEATS RANDOLPH-MACON, 114-87 (1/26)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's swimming team improved to 4-6 overall, 3-0 in the ODAC, with a 114-87 victory over Randolph-Macon.

Sophomore Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) led the way with wins in the 200-yard IM (2:20.36), 100-yard butterfly (1:02.63) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:14.20). Fellow classmate Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles) took first place in two events, the 100- (57.27) and 200-yard freestyle (2:03.87).

Randolph-Macon (5-2, 3-1), in just its second year as a varsity program, was led by sophomore Christine Hodge (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill). Hodge took home first place in the 500- (5:46.95) and 1000-yard freestyle events (11:48.19).

W&L sophomore Michelle Moore (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes) and R-MC freshman Elizabeth Belch (Manassas, Va./Osbourn) won the other two individual events. Moore took the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.69) and Belch won the 50-yard freestyle (25.57).

The Generals' men's and women's squads will be in action again on Saturday as they travel to Marymount and Mary Washington. W&L will swim Marymount at 12:00 noon and Mary Washington at 5:00 pm.

W&L DROPS A PAIR TO JOHNS HOPKINS (1/20)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams were both defeated by Johns Hopkins on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va. Hopkins took a 163-93 victory against the men's squad, while the W&L women fell, 170-70.

The W&L men (6-2) were led by freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), who placed first in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 55.68. Sophomore Brett Burns (Atlanta, Ga./The Westminster Schools) also took home a victory in the 50 Freestyle (22.87).

On the women's side, W&L (3-6) was paced by Michelle Moore (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy), who won the 100 Backstroke in a time of 1:06.22.

Both squads will return to action on Friday, Jan. 26, as the Generals host Randolph-Macon at 6:00 pm.

W&L SPLITS WITH CATHOLIC (1/13)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's swimming team improved to 6-1 on the season with a 139-66 defeat of Catholic, while the women's squad dropped a 115-90 decision to the Cardinals on Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Va.

The men's team was led by senior co-captain Mike Miraglia (Rockville, Md./Rockville), who posted victories in the 200 IM (2:04.31) and the 200 Breastroke (2:18.80).

Sophomore Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) placed first in the 1000 Freestyle with a meet-record time of 10:18.07, while freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) set a team season-best time with his win in the 100 Freestyle (49.43).

W&L also posted meet-record times in both the 400 Medley Relay (3:38.22) and the 400 Freestyle Relay (3:19.85).

On the women's side, sophomore Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) captured wins in the 200 IM (2:21.15), 200 Butterfly (2:17.44) and the 200 Breastroke (2:36.58), while sophomore Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles) collected victories in the 100 (56.80) and 200 Freestyle (2:03.11).

The W&L men handed Catholic (5-1) its first loss of the season, while the Catholic women's team improved to 5-1. The W&L women are now 3-5 overall.

W&L will take a week off before hosting Johns Hopkins in a dual meet next Saturday at 11:00 am.

W&L SWEEPS A PAIR FROM BUFFALO STATE (1/12)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swim teams notched victories over Buffalo State on Friday evening in Lexington, Va. The men's squad defeated the Bengals, 119-65, while the women's team picked up a 110-49 triumph.

The W&L men (5-1) were led by freshman Colin Mitchell (Alberta, Canada/Springbank), who took home victories in the 100 Backstroke (58.29) and the 200 Freestyle (1:51.89).

Sophomore Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles) posted three individual wins to lead the Washington and Lee women (3-4). She placed first in the 50 (27.11), 100 (58.49) and 200 (2:03.75) Freestyle events.

Sophomore Michelle Moore (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) finished first in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:07.43.

The Buffalo State men's squad fell to 0-5 overall, while the women dropped to 0-6.

Both W&L squads will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host Catholic University. Meet time is set to begin at 2:00 pm.

W&L MEN'S SWIMMING DEFEATS V.M.I., 138-67 (12/6)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Senior Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and freshman Jonathan James (Covington, La./Covington) each won two events to lead Washington and Lee to a 138-67 victory over crosstown rival V.M.I. in men's swimming action on Wednesday evening in Lexington.

Hayes took home wins in the 100 Butterfly (53.86) and the 100 Breastroke (1:04.65), while James placed first in the 500 (5:08.71) and 1000 free (10:39.93).

Freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) also set a meet record with his win in the 100 backstroke in a time of 54.28.

W&L (4-1) will return to action on Friday, Jan.12, as it hosts Buffalo State. Meet time is set for 5:00 pm.

W&L WOMEN'S SWIMMING CAPTURES SECOND ODAC VICTORY, 131-84 (12/5)

SWEET BRIAR, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's swim team picked up its second consecutive conference victory with a 131-84 triumph over Sweet Briar on Wednesday evening in ODAC swimming action in Sweet Briar, Va.

The win gave W&L its 10th consecutive victory over the Vixens.

Sophomore Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) led the Generals with wins in the 100 Butterfly (1:13.29) and 200 Breastroke (2:58.88).

Sophomore Michelle Moore (Houston, Texas/St. Agnes Academy) placed first in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a time of 1:15.48, while freshman Jackie Green (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) took home first place honors in the 200 backstroke (2:48.45).

Washington and Lee (2-4, 2-0 ODAC) won 10 of the 12 events.

The Generals will return to action on Friday, Jan. 12, as they host Buffalo State at 5:00 pm.

W&L SWIMMING COMPETES IN FRANKLIN & MARSHALL INVITATIONAL (12/2)

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams were in action in the Franklin & Marshall Invitational on Friday and Saturday morning. The Generals' menÕs squad finished 8th of 13 teams, while the women placed 14th of 16 teams.

Leading the way for the men's squad was freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), who took first place in the 100 back with a school- and meet-record time of 52.25. He eclipsed the school record of 52.51 held by David Olson since the 1988 season. The time was also an NCAA "B" cut qualifier.

Senior Mike Miraglia (Rockville, Md./Rockville) placed 12th of 55 competitors in the 100 fly with a time of 54.29 and 13th of 38 in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.79.

The women were led by sophomore Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles), who placed 21st of 92 swimmers in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:03.64.

The Generals will be in action again on Dec. 6 as the women's team travels to Sweet Briar and the men's team travels across town to take on VMI. The women's meet is slated to begin at 7:00 pm, while the men will begin at 6:00 pm.

W&L COMPETES IN DAY ONE OF FRANKLIN & MARSHALL INVITATIONAL (12/1)

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming squads were in action on Friday afternoon in day one of the two-day Franklin & Marshall Invitational. Through four events, the men's team is tied for 10th of 12 teams, while the women's squad finished the first day in 12th of 12 teams.

Sophomore Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) picked up five of W&L's eight first-day points on the men's side, placing 12th in the 400 IM (4:23.29).

Sophomore Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) garnered her squad's only point on the day by placing 16th in the 400 IM (4:56.33).

Williams leads the men's side after day one with 87, while Case Western Reserve leads the women's 12 teams with 77 points.

Both squads will compete in day two of the invitational tomorrow morning at 8:00 am.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING PICKS UP FIRST VICTORY OF SEASON (11/29)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee women's swim team opened up its ODAC schedule with a 142-57 win over Randolph-Macon Women's College in women's swimming action on Wednesday evening at Cy Twombly Pool.

W&L took home first place honors in 10 of the 11 events on the day.

The Generals (1-4, 1-0 ODAC) were led by senior Laura Ingoldsby (McLean, Va./Holy Child) who placed first in the 200 (2:10.14) and 500 (5:38.53) yard freestyle events, while Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) also gathered two first places, winning the 400 IM (4:56.25) and the 200 Backstroke (2:20.26).

W&L will return to action this weekend on Friday and Saturday in the Franklin & Marshall Invitational with Friday's action beginning at 8:00 am.

W&L SWIMMING DROPS MEN'S AND WOMEN'S MEET TO GETTYSBURG (11/19)

GETTYSBURG, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee swimming teams were in action on Sunday afternoon and both the men's and women's squad were defeated by Gettysburg. The men fell by a score of 111-93, while the women were defeated, 142-55.

Leading the way for the men (3-1) was senior Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), who both set pool records in taking first place honors. Hayes notched his mark in the 100 fly, posting a time of 52.53, while Ritter broke the record in the 100 back with a time of 53.92. The duo teamed with senior Mike Miraglia (Rockville, Md./Rockville) and sophomore Brett Burns (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) to win the 200 medley relay as well, finishing the event in 1:40.36.

Miraglia won the 100 breast (1:03.56) and sophomore Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) claimed first place in the 400 IM with a time of 4:31.31.

On the women's (0-4) side, sophomore Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles) took home first place honors in the 100 (56.93) and 200 free (2:04.52). Sophomore Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) placed second in the 400 IM with a time of 4:58.66.

The women will be in action again on Nov. 29 as they host Randolph-Macon Woman's College in a 6:30 pm meet. The men will be underway again on Dec. 1-2 at the Franklin & Marshall Tournament. That tournament is slated to begin at 10:00 am.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee menÕs swimming team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 131-73 win over Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon. The W&L women dropped to 0-3 with a 127-75 loss to the Garnet Tide.

Leading the way for the menÕs squad was freshman Eric Ritter (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook), who took home first place honors in the 200 back (1:59.76) and 200 free (1:49.95). Senior Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) placed first in the 200 fly (2:02.03), while sophomore Brett Burns (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) placed first in the 50 free (23.11). Senior Mike Miraglia (Rockville, Md./Rockville), freshman Paul Laraia (Houston, Texas/Memorial) and sophomore Patrick Frankfort (Lynchburg, Va./E.C. Glass) all took home first place honors as well. Miraglia won the 100 free (50.76), LaRaia won the 500 free (5:04.86) and Frankfort won the 1000 free (10:30.82).

On the womenÕs side, sophomore Blair Huffman (Roanoke, Va./North Cross) won the 200 fly (2:19.32) and placed second in the 200 breast (2:36.37). Junior Maggie Fagan (Manhasset, N.Y./Sacred Heart) placed second in the 200 fly (2:34.87).

Both squads will be in action again on Sunday as they travel to Gettysburg for a 1:00 pm meet with the Bullets.

W&L SWIMMING SPLITS WITH TRANSYLVANIA (10/28)

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- The Washington and Lee men's swimming team won its second consecutive meet with a 131.5-56.5 victory over Transylvania, while the women's squad lost a close decision to the Pioneers, 107-98, on Saturday afternoon.

The men's team was led by freshman Paul LaRaia (Houston, Texas/Memorial) who won three events on the day. LaRaia won the 1000 free (10:53.27), 200 butterfly (2:04.84) and the 200 backstroke (5:10.52).

On the women's side, the Generals were paced by sophomore Kelli Austin (Niles, Mich./Niles). Austin won the 100 (56.34) and 200 (2:04.03) free events, while also leading the 400 free relay team to a victory with a time of 3:53.91.

Both squads will return to action on Saturday, November 18, at Swarthmore. The meet will begin at 2:00 pm.

W&L SPLITS SEASON OPENER WITH SEWANEE (10/21)

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's swim team opened the 2000-01 season with a win over Sewanee, 53-34, while the women's team was defeated by the Tigers, 58-31.

The men's team won nine out of the 11 relays that were contested on the day. The men's 300-yard free relay team of freshman Drew Catanese (Southampton, Mass./Suffield Academy) and seniors Colin Hayes (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and Mike Miraglia (Rockville, Md./Rockville) set the tone in the first men's event in defeating the Sewanee relay team by seven seconds with a time of 2:47.14.

The women's squad won three of the contested relays and was paced by junior Katie Kennedy (Delran, N.J./Delran) who competed in all three of the wins.

Both squads will be back in action next Saturday as they will travel to Lexington, Ky., to take on Transylvania University in a dual meet at 1:00 pm.
