GREENSBORO, N.C. – First-year William Borst (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) set a new ODAC and meet record to lead the Washington and Lee men's swimming team on day one of the ODAC Championship on Friday at the Greensboro Aquatics Center.
The Generals lead the meet after the first day of competition with 340 points. Randolph-Macon is second with 181 points and Hampden-Sydney is third (117).
Borst set the record in the 500-yard free with a time of 4:37.62. First-year Ben Brown (Baldwin. Md. / Loyola Blakefield) took second in the event with a time of 4:41.21, while sophomore Bancks Holmes (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) placed third (4:45.25). First-year Michael Struk (Pittsburgh, Pa. / North Allegheny) and senior Jamie Hayes (Chattanooga, Tenn. / McCallie School) took the fifth (4:46.72) and sixth (4:47.54) spots respectively.
In the 200-yard IM, first-year Jared Nickodem (Jackson, Wis. / Cedarburg Senior) took the top spot with a time of 1:53.73, while junior Thomas Caldwell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton) finished third (1:55.50). First-year Brian Legarth (Apex. N.C. / Apex), sophomore Patrick Lawrence (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley), senior Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) and junior Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's) placed fifth (1:56.04), sixth (1:56.67), seventh (1:57.05) and eighth (2:00.26).
First-year Sam Logue (Fallston, Md. / Loyola Blakefield) had a first-place finish in the 50-yard free with a time of 20.90. Junior Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) finished third in a time of 21.17 and junior Corey Connelly (Belleair, Fla. / Palm Harbor University) placed fourth after touching the wall in 21.36. Senior Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day) took the fifth spot (21.64), while first-year Evan Kramer (Taylors, S.C. / Eastside) placed seventh (21.79).
The quartet of Lawrence, Schammel, Thetford and first-year Ethan Fischer (Columbus, Ohio / Upper Arlington) touched the wall in 3:26.45 to take first-place in the 400-yard medley relay.
Thetford was joined by Connelly, Logue and Kramer on the 200-yard free relay that finished first with a time of 1:23.06.
W&L returns to the pool on Saturday for day two of the ODAC Championship. Preliminary rounds are set to begin at 10:00 am.
