W&L Men's Swimming Tops Catholic, 172-84

LEXINGTON, Va. – The 23rd ranked Washington and Lee men's swimming team defeated Catholic, 172-84, on Saturday at Cy Twombly Pool. This was the Generals' final meet in the Cy Twombly Pool, as the team will compete in the new W&L Natatorium next season.

The Blue and White took first in all 14 events. First-year Sam Logue (Fallston, Md. / Loyola Blakefield) led the way for the Generals winning two individual events and swimming on two winning relays. He claimed the top spots in the 50-yard free (21.62) and 100-yard fly (52.46).

Logue was joined by juniors Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's), and Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) and first-year Ethan Fischer (Columbus, Ohio / Upper Arlington) on the winning 200-yard medley relay that touched the wall in 1:37.26.

The quartet of Logue, Thetford, senior Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day) and first-year Evan Kramer (Taylors, S.C. / Eastside) placed first in the 200-yard free relay with a time of 1:26.34.

Thetford also had a first-place finish in the 100-yard free (47.99), while Fischer took first in the 200-yard IM (2:02.42). Senior Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) and junior Austin Choi (Valencia, Calif. / West Ranch) placed second (53.80) and third (54.90) respectively in the 100-yard fly.

First-year Ben Brown (Baldwin, Md. / Loyola Blakefield) finished first in the 1000-yard free with a time of 9:54.98, while junior William McMurty (Park Hills, Ky. / Covington Catholic) and sophomore Austin Jennings (Disputanta, Va.) took third (10:26.49) and fourth (10:31.81) respectively.

Junior Corey Connelly (Belleair, Fla. / Palm Harbor University) took first in the 200-yard free (1:45.63), while Kramer placed second (1:47.37) and senior Jamie Hayes (Chattanooga, Tenn. / McCallie School) finished fourth (1:52.28).

In the 100-yard back, sophomore Patrick Lawrence (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) took the top spot with a time of 55.58, while sophomore Thomas Agostini (Elgin, S.C. / Spring Valley) finished third (57.07) and senior Alex Kirven (Davidson, N.C. / William Amos Hough) placed fourth (58.38).

Fischer had a first-place finish in the 100-yard back with a time of 59.71, while senior Trenton Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) took second (1:03.26) and senior Harrison Westgarth (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) finished fourth (1:04.39).

Schammel, first-years Jared Nickodem (Jackson, Wis. / Cedarburg Senior) and Wade Patterson (Tampa, Fla. / Berkeley Prep) placed first (1:57.74), second (1:59.11) and third (2:01.14) respectively in the 200-yard fly.

In the 200-yard backstroke, first-year Brian Legarth (Alex. N.C. / Apex) placed first with a time of 2:01.37. Junior Thomas Caldwell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton) took the top spot in the 200-yard breast (2:16.43), and first-year William Borst (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) claimed first in the 500-yard free (4:47.92).

The Generals return to the pool on January 21, when they travel to York (Pa.) to take on the host Spartans and Marymount at 1:00 pm.
