RICHMOND, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team picked up 228 points on day one of the Randolph-Macon Invitational at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center on Friday to sit in first place out of 10 teams.
The winning 200-yard free relay squad of senior Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day), juniors Tommy Thetford (Birminghman, Ala. / The Altamont), and Corey Connelly (Belleair, Fla. / Palm Harbor University) and first-year Sam Logue (Fallston, Md. / Loyola Blakefield) touched the wall in 1:25.10 to set a new meet record.
Logue and Thetford were joined by junior Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's) and first-year Ethan Fischer (Columbus, Ohio / Upper Arlington) on the 400-yard medley relay squad that placed first in a time of 3:34.03.
Thetford finished second in the 50-yard free in a time of 21.41, while Logue tied for third with a time of 21.63. First-year Ben Brown (Baldwin, Md. / Loyola Blakefield) finished sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.86, while junior Thomas Caldwell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton) placed eighth (2:00.08) and first-year Brian Legarth (Apex, N.C. / Apex) finished ninth (2:00.48).
In the 500-yard free, sophomore Sam Childress (Springfield, Ill. / Glenwood) had a seventh-place showing with a time of 4:52.34 and sophomore Austin Jennings (Disputanta, Va. / Walsingham Academy) touched the wall in 4:52.42 to take eighth.
The men will be back in action on Saturday for the final day of the invitational. The meet is set to begin at 9:00 am.
