LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team opened up its 2016-17 season with 587.5 points and a first-place finish out of six teams at the Derby City Invitational on Saturday at the Ralph Wright Natatorium on the campus of the University of Louisville.
Birmingham Southern took second place with 505.5 points, Bellarmine claimed third with 414 points and McKendree placed fourth with 354 points. Centre finished with 329 points and Ashbury had with 277 points.
Junior Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) took first in the 50 free with a time of 21.74 and second in the 100 free (47.41). First-year Jared Nickodem (Jackson, Wis. / Cedarburg Senior) touched the wall in 1:58.63 to take first in the 200 fly. Thetford and Nickodem were also part of the 200 medley relay that placed second (1:37.69) that also featured first-years Sam Logue (Fallston, Md. / Loyola Blakefield) and Ethan Fischer (Columbus, Ohio / Upper Arlington).
Thetford, senior Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day), junior Corey Connelly (Belleair, Fla. / Palm Harbor University) and first-year Evan Kramer (Taylors, S.C. / Eastside) took first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:11.07.
Logue also had a second-place finish in the 50 free (21.91), a third-place finish in the 100 fly with a time of 53.48 and a fifth-place finish in the 100 free (49.79). First-year Brian Legarth (Apex, N.C. / Apex) took second in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.72 and third in the 200 IM (2:01.86).
Burns finished third in the 50 free (22.20) and 100 free (49.04). First-year Wade Patterson (Tampa, Fla. / Berkeley Prep) touched the wall in 2:01.52 to take third in the 200 butterfly, while first-years Ben Brown (Baldwin. Md. / Loyola Blakefield) and William Borst (San Antonio, Texas / Ronald Reagan) had third-place finishes in the 1000 free (10:05.75) and 500 free (4:50.36) respectively. Brown also had a fifth-place finish in the 200 IM with a time 2:04.19.
Fischer placed fourth (1:02.34) and senior Trenton Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) took fifth (1:02.94) in the 100 breast. Sophomore Bancks Holmes (Raleigh, N.C. / Needham B. Broughton) placed fifth in the 200 breast with a time of 2:18.24, and senior Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) finished fourth in the 100 butterfly (54.37).
The Generals return to the pool on October 21 when they host Randolph-Macon at 5:30 pm.
