WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team cruised to a 165-97 victory at Catholic on Saturday, winning 11 of the 15 events.
The Generals were led by sophomores Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) and Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's Catholic School), who each won two individual events. Theford also swam on two winning relay teams, while Schammel participated on the winning 200 medley relay team. Additionally, junior Andrew Botelho (Huntersville, N.C. / William Amos Hough) won one individual event and swam on both winning relay teams.
Thetford produced a victory in the 50 free, clocking in at 20.82. He also won the 100 free with a time of 47.93. He swam the anchor leg on the 200 medley relay team that won with a time of 1:37.29 and also swam the final leg of the winning 200 free relay team (1:28.02). He was joined on the 200 medley relay team by Botelho, first-year Colin McKinnon (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor) and Schammel. The 200 free relay squad consisted of Botelho, senior Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas / Memorial), sophomore John Carmody (West Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic) and Thetford.
Schammel posted individual wins in the 100 fly (52.87) and 200 fly (1:56.00), while Botelho won the 100 back with a time of 54.86.
McKinnon swam to a first-place finish in the 100 breast (1:01.67) and junior Harrison Westgarth (McKinney, Texas / McKinney) won the 200 breast with a time of 2:17.98.
Other event winners for the Generals included sophomore Corey Connelly (Palm Harbor, Fla. / Palm Harbor University) and first-year Patrick Lawrence (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley). Connelly won the 200 free in 1:46.72 and Lawrence emerged victorious in the 200 back with a time of 2:03.03.
Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it hosts VMI and Ferrum for a 1:00 pm meet.
