RICHMOND, Va. – The 12th-ranked Washington and Lee men's swimming team wrapped up competition at the Randolph-Macon Invitational on Saturday with 717 points to finish first out of 10 teams at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center.
The Generals bettered Washington College (624.5), Franklin & Marshall (429), Catholic (418.5), Randolph-Macon (413), Marymount (275), St. Mary's (Md.) (264), Howard (247.5), Goucher (164.5) and Hampden-Sydney (12).
Sophomore Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's Catholic School) led the way for the Blue and White, claiming two individual events and participating on one winning relay.
Schammel took the top spot in the 100-yard butterfly (51.50) and in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.33). He also swam on the 200-yard medley relay that finished first in 1:36.13. Schammel was joined by first-year Colin McKinnon (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor), sophomore Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) and junior Andrew Botelho (Huntersville, N.C. / William Amos Hough).
W&L also won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:08.71. The squad consisted of Thetford, Botelho, sophomore Corey Connelly (Palm Harbor, Fla. / Palm Harbor University) and junior Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day).
Botelho, Burns and Connelly swam on the 800-yard freestyle relay, along with first-year Sam Childress (Springfield, Ill. / Glenwood), that touched in at 7:07.76 to finish second.
Thetford, Botelho, Connelly, Childress and McKinnon posted Top 5 finishes in individual events for the Generals. Thetford won the 100-yard freestyle (46.29), while Botelho placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (54.19). Connelly took fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:45.60) and Childress followed to finish fifth (1:45.73). McKinnon finished fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.42) and in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.74).
The 200-yard medley relay made up of first-year Patrick Lawrence (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley), sophomore John Carmody (West Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic), and juniors Trenten Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford) and Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) finished in fourth-place in 1:38.91.
Lawrence tied for fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.86, while sophomores Thomas Caldwell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton) and Jacob Rosen (Old Tappan, N.J. / Northern Valley Regional) also finished in the Top 5 in events. Caldwell placed fifth in the 400-yard individual medley (4:19.48) and Rosen notched fifth in the 1650-yard freestyle event (17:03.56).
W&L returns to the pool on January 9, when it travels to Bridgewater to take on Hampden-Sydney for a 1:00 pm meet.
