LANCASTER, Pa. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team currently sits in second place with 785 points, behind Delaware (1,100), after day two of competition at the Franklin & Marshall Invitational.
Sophomore Tommy Thetford (Birmingham, Ala. / The Altamont) had two Top 3 finishes in individual events for W&L. He placed second in the 50-yard freestyle (20.87) and took third in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.08).
Thetford was also a member of the 200-yard medley relay squad that touched the wall in 1:35.82 for third. Thetford was joined on the quartet by sophomore Noah Schammel (Greenville, S.C. / St. Joseph's Catholic School), and juniors Andrew Botelho (Huntersville, N.C. / William Amos Hough) and Trenten Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford).
Schammel had a second-place showing in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.87 and Babcock finished ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.17).
Botelho, along with first-year Sam Childress (Springfield, Ill. / Glenwood) and sophomore Corey Connelly (Palm Harbor, Fla. / Palm Harbor University) finished behind Thetford in the 200-yard freestyle. Childress placed sixth (1:45.18), Connelly took eighth (1:45.94) and Botelho finished 10th (1:46.77) in the event.
The 200-yard medley relay team that consisted of first-years Patrick Lawrence (Columbus, Ohio / Bishop Hartley) and Colin McKinnon (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor), sophomore John Carmody (West Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic) and junior Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) clocked in at 1:38.17 for sixth place.
McKinnon and Ferguson also had seventh-place showings in individual events for the Generals; McKinnon finished seventh in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.82) and Ferguson took seventh in the 100-yard butterfly (53.84).
The Generals notched three Top 10 finishes in the 400-yard individual medley event, with sophomore Thomas Caldwell (Greenville, S.C. / Wade Hampton) placing sixth (4:19.60), senior Alex Fox (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) following in seventh (4:20.74) and sophomore William McMurtry (Park Hills, Ky. / Covington Catholic) finishing 10th (4:23.95).
The men return to action on Sunday for the final day of competition at the F&M Invitational. The meet is set to begin at 9:00 am.
