W&L Men's Swimming Wraps Up Second Day at the BMC Championships
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee men's swimming team had a successful second day of action at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.
Day two featured two relays that placed in the Top 10 and six individual swimmer place in the Top 20 in their respective events.
The 200 medley relay team of seniors Matthew Hesser (Midlothian, Va. / Governor's School) and David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio / Oakwood), along with first-years Thomas Ferguson (Midlothian, Va. / Trinity Episcopal) and Jake Burns (Greensboro, N.C. / Greensboro Day) teamed up to take 10th place in a time of 1:34.78. First-years Trenton Babcock (Belmont, Mich. / Rockford), Andrew Botelho (Huntersville, N.C. / William Amos Hough), Matt Kiser (Dunwoody, Ga. / Dunwoody) and Burns comprised the 800 free relay team that also placed 10th in 7:02.89.
Ferguson led all the swimmers with a 14th place finish in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 51.59. Senior Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C. / Asheville Christian Academy) also had a good finish, taking 16th place in the 400 IM in a time of 4:14.43. Sophomore Alex Fox (Winston Salem, N.C. / RJ Reynolds) placed just behind Shuman, finishing in 17th place (4:13.64).
Ireland also swam in the 100 fly and placed 18th (51.76), while Hesser (51.93) and first-year John Womack (Glendale, Ariz. / Glendale Preparatory Academy) (52.78) placed 19th and 21st, respectively.
Kiser was the only swimmer to place in the 200 free as he finished in 23rd place in a time of 1:44.86. Babcock placed 22nd (59.78) in the 100 breast, while first-year Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas / Memorial) placed 23rd (1:00.24). Hesser also placed 19th in the 100 back in a time of 52.52.
Action continues on Sunday with the final day of competition.
