CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team had a successful second day of action at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships held at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Center.
Day two featured three NCAA cut times and three school records paced by senior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass. / Wellesley), who won the 50 free with a time of 20.15 in the finals. Sykes swam the prelims in 20.01, the fastest time in Division III this season. It also improved his NCAA "A" cut time from earlier this season.
The 400 medley relay team of senior Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del. / Salesianum School), junior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio / Oakwood), first-year Brennan Haley (Westfield, N.J. / Westfield) and Sykes finished fifth overall with a school-record and NCAA "B" cut time of 3:24.21. Marsh led off the relay with a school-record time of 50.63 in the 100 back.
The 200 free relay team also produced an NCAA "B" cut, finishing seventh overall with a time of 1:23.07. Sykes led off and was joined by senior Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va. / St. Andrew's), junior Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va. / Cape Henry Collegiate) and first-year Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas / Memorial).
Gehrs wrapped up the top performances on the day with an eighth-place finish in the 200 IM, touching in 1:54.47.
Action continues on Friday with the third day of the four-day competition.
