W&L Men's Swimming In First Place at Yellow Jacket Invitational

RICHMOND, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's swimming team featured eight first-place finishes to lead the field after day one with 778 points at the Yellow Jacket Invitational on Saturday at the Collegiate School Aquatics Center.

W&L sits in first with 778 points, while Randolph-Macon (485.5), West Virginia tech (252.5), Marymount (236), Hampden-Sydney (221.5), Frostburg State (185) and Greensboro (117.5) wrapped up the team results.

Senior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) led the way with three first-place performances on the day. He registered an NCAA "A" cut time of 20.23 in the 50 free to win the event, and then was a member of the winning 200 free relay (1:26.39) featuring senior Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's) and first-years Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) and Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas/Memorial). Sykes also joined senior Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School), junior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) and first-year Brennan Haley (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) in the 400 medley relay to take first in a time of 3:29.23.

Six Generals recorded Top 10 times in the 50 free. Along with Sykes' winning time, Knuth was third (22.60), first-year Wesley Sigmon (Raleigh, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) placed fourth and Pritchard finished sixth (22.99). Junior Philip Dishuck (Tuscaloosa, Ala./Holy Spirit Catholic) and senior Will Ericson (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) also placed in the Top 10, recording eighth (23.34) and 10th (23.61), respectively.

In the 500 free, three W&L athletes notched top-five times, with first-year Alex Fox (Winston-Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) leading the way with a second-place finish, touching the wall in 4:47.43. First-year William Fries (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) came in third (4:53.60) in the event and sophomore Chase Flint (Suwanee, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) placed fifth (4:59.51). Fox also finished first in the 400 IM in a time of 4:13.42.

Gehrs and Marsh also finished in the Top 4, with Gehrs taking third in a time of 1:58.77 and Marsh placing fourth in 2:00.88.

The Generals swept the Top 5 places in the 100 fly, as Haley took first place in 52.21. Ireland was second (52.94), junior Matt Hesser (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) finished third (53.81), Knuth placed fourth (55.47) and junior Giovanni Marciano (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) took fifth (55.53).

The 100 back featured W&L in the Top 3 slots, as Marsh claimed the top spot (52.20), Haley was second (52.76) and sophomore Alex Cram (Columbia, S.C./Irmo) finished third (55.43).

Both the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay each took first. Marsh, Ireland, Haley and Sykes teamed up in the 200 medley to touch the wall in 1:34.11, and Marsh, Gehrs, Hesser and Fries clocked in at 7:08.54 in the 800 free relay.

Gehrs, Fries and Sykes finished in second (1:46.04), third (1:46.21) and fifth (1:48.16), respectively in the 200 free, and in the 100 breast, Ireland took second (1:00.57), Sigmon in fourth (1:02.57) and Marciano was fifth (1:04.04).

W&L returns to the pool on Sunday to compete in day two of the Yellow Jacket Invitational, set to begin at 10:00 am.
