W&L Men's Swimming Finishes Fifth at Wingate Quad Meet

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team finished competition at the Wingate Quad Meet to take fifth place on Saturday afternoon at the Mecklenburg Aquatics Center.

Wingate won the meet with 773 points. Queens of Charlotte came in second with 746 points, Gardner Webb was third with 669 points, Catawba was fourth with 447 points and W&L recorded 405 points for fifth.

The Generals were led by senior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), who registered an NCAA "B" cut time of 20.61 in the 50 free to take first place.

Six others notched Top 10 performances on the day. First-year Alex Fox (Winston Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) took eighth in the 1000 free with a time of 10:04.70 and senior Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) also finished in eighth in the 100 back (54.10).

In the 200 free, sophomore Chase Flint (Suwanee, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) clocked in at 1:49.42 for ninth place and first-year William Fries (Kirkwood, Mo./Kirkwood) was 10th (1:49.47).

Junior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) placed ninth in the 200 back (2:17.24) and junior Matt Hesser (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) rounded out the Top 10 times with a 10th-place performance in the 100 fly (54.35).

The 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay each finished in fifth, touching the wall in 1:37.18 and 3:13.41, respectively.

Other top performances included a 12th-place finish by Hesser in the 100 back (55.39) and Fox taking 14th place in the 400 IM (4:20.95).

The Generals return to the pool on November 17, when they travel to Carnegie Mellon to face CMU, Rochester and Allegheny.
