CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team is fourth after day one of competition at the Wingate Quad Meet on Friday evening at the Mecklenburg Aquatics Center.
Wingate sits in first place with 394 points on day one. Queens of Charlotte is second with 344 points, Gardner Webb recorded 308 points to be in third place and Catawba is in fifth with 188 points.
Senior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) led the Generals with a first-place finish in the 100 free, clocking in at 46.65.
In the 200 back, three Generals registered times in the Top 10. Senior Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) led the way with a time of 1:58.35 for sixth place. Junior Matt Hesser (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) touched the wall in ninth (1:59.77) and first-year Brennan Haley (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) took 10th (2:00.77).
W&L also finished in the top-half of the field in two other events. Junior David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) took 10th in the 100 breast, clocking in at 1:01.01 and senior Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's) was 13th in the 100 free with a time of 48.89.
In the 200 free relay, junior Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate), first-year Harris Pritchard (Houston, Texas/Memorial), Sykes and Gehrs teamed up to place third (1:26.51), while the 400 medley relay finished in fourth in 3:35.56.
Other top performances included first-year Daniel Pesin (Scotch Plains, N.J./Scotch-Plains Fanwood) finishing in 12th in the 200 IM (2:93.03) and first-year Alex Fox (Winston Salem, N.C./RJ Reynolds) taking 13th in the 500 free (4:54.77)
The Generals return to the pool on Saturday, when they compete in day two of the Wingate Quad Meet at the Mecklenburg Aquatics Center, set to begin at 1:00 pm.
