Four Generals Earn All-Conference Men's Swimming Honors

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – The Bluegrass Mountain Conference released its 2012 all-conference men's swimming team on Thursday afternoon and Washington and Lee had four athletes recognized.

Seniors Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville), Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), and junior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) all received all-conference honors based upon their performances at the BMC Championships last week in Charlotte, N.C.

Washnock received all-conference laurels in three events, finishing sixth in the 200 IM (1:53.91), second in the 200 IM with a school-record time of 4:00.03 and third in the 200 back (1:49.51) at the Bluegrass Championships.  Washnock's selections marked the fourth straight year that he earned All-BMC honors.

Brian Stirling was an all-conference honoree in both the 100 fly and 100 free events.  He placed sixth in the 100 free (45.99) and third in the 100 fly with a school-record time of 49.26.  Like Washnock, it was the fourth straight year that he received all-conference honors.

Jeff Stirling also garnered All-BMC accolades for the first time in his career, finishing sixth in the 100 fly with a time of 49.76.  Sykes was an all-conference honoree for the second straight year, touching second in the 50 free with a time of 20.48 seconds.

Washington and Lee finished fourth overall out of 14 teams at the Bluegrass Mountain Championships and will now wait to see which athletes will be selected to participate at the NCAA Division III Championships held on March 21-24 in Indianapolis, Ind.
