W&L Men's Swimming Team Wins 8-Team F&M Invitational

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Washington and Lee men's swim team captured all five relays and received eight individual event wins en route to winning the two-day F&M Invitational hosted by Franklin & Marshall College.

The Generals totaled 1,022.5 points to out pace second-place F&M (754). Ramapo (460), St. Mary's (381), Susquehanna (363), Washington College (314.5), McDaniel (175) and King's (44) rounded out the team finishes. 

In the 200 free relay, the W&L team of junior Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), junior Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's), sophomore Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate) and senior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) won with a meet-record time of 1:24.41

Sykes teamed with Brian Stirling, Gehrs and senior Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) to capture the 400 free relay in 3:07.94. Brian Stirling, Gehrs, senior Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and first-year Chase Flint (Suwanee, Ga./Greater Atlanta Christian) then captured the 800 free relay with a time of 7:00.63. 

In the 200 medley relay, it was junior Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum), senior Brad Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow), Jeff Stirling and Sykes that won with a time of 1:36.33. The Generals wrapped up their relay dominance with a victory in the 400 medley relay as Marsh, senior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville), Brian Stirling and Sykes posted a winning time of 3:30.17.

Washnock, who won three individual races and set a pair of meet records, led the Generals. He captured the 200 back in meet-record time (1:53.93), 200 individual medley (1:57.31) and he set new meet standard in the 400 IM with a mark of 4:08.30. 

Washnock was followed in the 400 IM by sophomore Matt Hesser (Midlothian, Va./Governor's School) and first-year Alex Hampel (Middletown, Del./Salesianum), who finished in second and third with times of 4:13.27 and 4:14.31, respectively.

Brian Stirling (46.79) and Sykes (47.26) went 1-2 in the 100 free. Jeff Stirling won the 100 fly with a time of 50.97 and was followed closely by Brian Stirling (2nd, 51.00) and sophomore David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) (4th, 52.31). 

Sophomore Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian) was the winner in the 200 fly with a time of 1:56.86, while Hartman took third in 1:58.29.

Flint added a second-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:44.89 and the Generals turned in a dominant showing in the 50 free, taking six of the top seven spots. Sykes, who also recorded an NCAA "B" cut time of 20.86 in a 50 free time trial, won the event in 21.01. Brian Stirling followed in third (21.52), Jeff Stirling in fourth (21.73), Gehrs in fifth (21.83), senior Cam Smith (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) in sixth (22.17) and Knuth in seventh (22.20). 

The Generals return to the pool on January 21, when they take part in a double duel with Catholic at Marymount beginning at 2:00 pm.
