W&L Men's Swimming Fells Transylvania, 131-88

LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee won 12 events, led by a pair of event victories from senior Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and sophomore David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood), in producing a 131-88 win over Transylvania in men's swimming action on Saturday morning at the Cy Twombly Pool.

Ireland won the 200 fly with a time of 2:01.53 and also claimed a win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.13.  Additionally, he swam on the 400 medley relay team that won with a time of 3:34.83.  Joining him on the relay were junior Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) and seniors Brian (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery).

Hartman claimed a win in the 200 free (1:52.62) and 100 fly (54.63) events, while Brian Stirling won the 100 free (48.57) and Jeff Stirling won the 50 free (22.40).  Marsh added a win in the 100 back with a time of 55.65 and senior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) won the 500 free (5:09.40).

Sophomore Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian Academy) touched first in the 1000 free (10:19.67), senior Brad Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) won the 200 back (2:02.24) and first-year Alex Hampel (Middletown, Del./Salesianum) claimed victory in the 200 breast (2:21.32).

The win improved W&L to 3-0 on the season, while Transylvania fell to 0-2 overall.  Washington and Lee returns to action on Friday as it takes on Wingate, Queens, Limestone and Catawba for a two-day event.  Friday's action begins at 8:00 pm and Saturday action will begin at 1:00 pm.
