W&L Swimming Competes at TCNJ Lion Invitational
EWING, N.J. – The Washington and Lee men's and women's swimming teams both reside in third place following the second day of competition at the three-day College of New Jersey Lions Invitational on Saturday.
The W&L women have totaled 675 points and trail Johns Hopkins (1,001) and Springfield (790). Host TCNJ (596) is fourth and is followed by West Chester (181) and Rowan (123). The W&L men have amassed 557.7 points and they trail TCNJ (1175.5) and Johns Hopkins (780.5). Springfield is fourth (544.5), West Chester is fifth (207) and Rowan is sixth (92).
The women have claimed two event winners through the first two days of competition. Sophomore Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) finished first overall in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:21.52, while first-year Lauren Kasoff (Owings Mills, Md./Saint Paul's) won the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:46.49.
Junior Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) has registered a pair of second-place finishes thus far, touching second in the 400 IM (4:47.16) and in the 200 backstroke (2:11.82). She also swam the opening leg on the third-place finishing 200 medley relay team that touched in a time of 1:53.62. She was joined by junior Dana Fredericks (Yorktown, Va./York), Kasoff and first-year Meredith Hardy (Cary, N.C./Athens Drive).
Other top results included fourth-places by senior Tess Hayden (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier), sophomore Delaney Rolfe (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) and Kasoff. Hayden touched fourth in the 100 back (1:03.37), Rolfe placed fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:17.97) and Kasoff finished fourth in the 200 IM (2:15.26).
The W&L men notched several runner-up finishes through the first two days, led by first-year David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood), who was second in the 200 fly (1:54.13) and the 100 breast stroke (59.35). Ireland also took home third place in the 200 breast, touching the pad with a time of 2:11.75.
Sophomore Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) took home second place in the 50 free with a time of 20.90 and he swam a leg of the 200 medley relay squad that finished third with a time of 1:35.59. He was joined by first-year Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate), Ireland and junior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery).
First-year Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian Academy) finished third overall in the 200 fly (1:58.91), while Brian Stirling placed third in the 100 fly (51.12). Junior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) added a fourth-place finish in the 200 back (1:57.43) and he led off the 400 medley relay squad that placed third overall with a time of 3:33.90. He was joined by Ireland, junior Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and Brian Stirling.
The third and final day of action continues from The College of New Jersey on Sunday beginning at 10:00 AM.
