CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team captured third place and recorded three NCAA "B" cut times on the final day of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships on Saturday evening a the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Club.
Individually, the Generals were led by junior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville), who notched a second-place finish in the 200 backstroke. He touched in an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:50.18.
Also recording a "B" cut time for W&L was first-year David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood), who finished fifth in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:52.20.
The 400 free relay team consisted of junior Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook), sophomore Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's), junior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and sophomore Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and they touched in a "B" cut time of 3:05.04 to finish in fourth place.
Other top finishers for the Generals on the final day of competition included sophomore Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School), who took fourth in the 200 back (1:53.49), Stirling, who took sixth in the 100 free (46.73) and first-year Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian Academy), who finished sixth in the 200 fly with a mark of 1:54.13.
The Generals will return to the pool on March 23, when they begin competition at the NCAA Championship meet in Knoxville, Tenn.
