W&L Men's Swimming Remains in Third at BMC Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team set two school records and recorded four NCAA "B" cut times in keeping its third place standing following competition on Friday at the Bluegrass Mountain Championships held at the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center.

Wingate leads the event heading into the final day of competition, having tallied 514 points.  Johns Hopkins is second with 471.5 points and is followed by W&L (288.5), SCAD (241), Limestone (213), Queens (189), West Virginia Wesleyan (177), Fairmont State (112), Pfeiffer (101), Catawba (100), Lenoir Rhyne (55), Transylvania (38) and Davis & Elkins (24).

Individually, the Generals were led on Friday by the 200 medley relay team that finished third overall with a school record and NCAA "B" cut time of 1:32.83.  Sophomore Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) led off the relay and was joined by junior Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal), junior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and sophomore Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley).

Brian Stirling also notched a school record time, touching in 49.78 to tie for fifth-place in the 100 fly event.  Stirling's time also eclipsed the NCAA "B" cut standard.  Other top finishers in the 100 fly included first-year David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood), who placed 10th (50.88), junior Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery), who finished 15th (51.80) and Marsh, who placed 16th (52.94).

Junior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) also registered an NCAA "B" cut time with a fourth-place finish in the 400 IM.  Washnock touched in 4:04.85 during the prelims and he recorded a 4:04.99 in the finals.  Senior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) notched a 10th-place finish in the event with a time of 4:09.69.

The final NCAA cut time recorded by the Generals on Friday was by Marsh, who placed fourth overall in the 100 back with a time of 51.87.  Other top finishes included a ninth-place showing by junior Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) in the 200 free (1:43.56) and a 12th-place finish (1:44.84) by sophomore Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's) in the same event.

Junior Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) paced W&L in the 100 breast as he finished 10th overall with a time of 58.71.  Ireland finished 11th (58.81), while Grattan notched a 15th-place showing with a time of 1:00.18 following a 58.99 in the morning prelims.
