WINGATE, N.C.— The Washington and Lee men's swimming team set one school record and recorded two NCAA cut times as it competed in day two of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships on Thursday evening.
Wingate continues to lead with 302 points, followed by Johns Hopkins (224), W&L (159), West Virginia Wesleyan (145) and SCAD (128) in the top five. Rounding out the standings are Limestone (122), Queens (116), Fairmont State (86), Pfeiffer (66), Catawba (55), Lenoir Rhyne (39), Transylvania (26) and Davis & Elkins (16).
The 400 medley relay squad of sophomore Wade Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School), first-year David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Kingwood), junior Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and sophomore Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's) swam a school record time of 3:25.83 in the event, finishing fifth while also recording an NCAA 'B' cut time. The previous record was 3:26.29, which had stood since the 2009 season.
In the other relay of the day, the 200 free relay squad of sophomore Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), Gehrs, junior Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) and junior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) touched in third place with a time of 1:23.29.
Individually, W&L had one NCAA 'B' cut time on the day, with Sykes finishing in a time of 20.77 in the 50 free while finishing in fourth place.
In the other individual event, senior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) swam to a Top-10 school time in the 500 free, touching in 4:41.46.
The Generals return to action tomorrow for day three of the BMC Championships with prelims at 10:00 am and finals at 6:00 pm.
