WINGATE, N.C. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team opened up the Bluegrass Mountain Conference championships on Wednesday evening, competing in two events.
Host Wingate University currently leads the meet with 76 points, followed by Johns Hopkins (59), Limestone (49), West Virginia Wesleyan (47) and Queens (47). The Generals follow in sixth place with 45 points, while the standings are rounded out by Fairmont (32), Savannah College of Art and Design (32), Pfeiffer (22) and Lenoir Rhyne (14).
The Generals had four swimmers finish in the top 16 of the 1,000 free, paced by a ninth-place finish by junior Frank Cullo (Sewickley, Pa./Central Catholic) (9:54.20). He was followed by first-year Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian) in 14th (10:04.35), junior Ben Absher (Knoxville, Tenn./Christian Academy) in 15th (10:09.28), and first-year Forrest Behne (Loveland, Ohio/Loveland) in 16th (10:09.71).
The relay squad of senior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy), sophomore Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's), junior Ryan Hartman (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) and sophomore Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) competed in the only other event of the evening, finishing fourth in the 800 free relay with a time of 6:58.01.
W&L returns to action tomorrow in day two of the BMC Championships, with preliminaries at 10:00 am and finals at 6:00 pm.
