W&L Men Swim Past Catholic and Marymount
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swim team claimed 11 event victories as it swam past Catholic University, 139-105, and Marymount University, 152-72, on Saturday afternoon at Cy Twombly Pool.
First-year David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) led W&L (8-3) with three individual victories on the day, finishing tops in the 100 breast (1:01.12), 200 breast (2:15.80) and 100 fly (53.21). Two other Generals claimed multiple-event wins, including sophomore Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's) in the 50 free (22.34) and 100 free (48.56) and senior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk) in the 200 fly (2:00.22) and 400 IM (4:18.12).
Other event victories included junior Frank Cullo (Sewickley, Pa./Central Catholic) swimming a top time of 17:28.86 in the 1650 free, sophomore Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) recording a time of 1:48.74 in the 200 free and first-year Eric Shuman (Black Mountain, N.C./Asheville Christian) in the 500 free (5:08.14). The Generals also had one relay win, with the 200 medley relay squad of junior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville), junior Brad Harder (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow), junior Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) and sophomore Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) recording a time of 1:41.39.
W&L returns to action on Saturday as they travel to Johns Hopkins for an 11:00 am meet.
