W&L Men's Swim Splits Meet with Wingate and Queens
LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team split its meet against Wingate and Queens (N.C.) at Cy Twombly Pool on Saturday, defeating Queens, 160-98, while falling to Wingate, 139-123.
W&L recorded two event victories and one relay triumph as it improved to 3-2 overall for the season. Leading the way for the Generals was sophomore Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley), swimming the 50 free in a time of 21.53, while first-year David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) finished tops in the 200 breast with a time of 2:12.52.
The 200 medley relay squad of first-year Robert Knuth (Virginia Beach, Va./Cape Henry Collegiate), Ireland, junior Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) and Sykes finished in a time of 1:38.47 to claim the top spot.
The Generals also recorded a quintet of second-place finishes, including junior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) in the 100 back (54.61) and 200 back (1:56.79), senior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) in the 500 free (4:57.32) and junior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) in the 100 fly (52.70).
Additionally, Knuth, Sykes, junior Ian Dexter (Mountain Brook, Ala./Mountain Brook) and Brian Stirling swam the 200 free relay in a time of 1:27.98 to secure a second-place finish.
W&L returns to action next Saturday as it faces Rochester, Franklin & Marshall and Carnegie Mellon at the F&M quad dual at 11:00 am.
