LEXINGTON, Va. – The Washington and Lee men's swimming team hosted Gardner-Webb on Friday evening at Cy Twombly pool, falling to the Runnin' Bulldogs, 86-114.
W&L (2-1) swam to three first-place finishes on the evening, including top individual finishes by sophomore Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and junior Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal). Sykes claimed the 50 free in a time of 21.17, while Grattan swam to a top finish in the 200 breast (2:26.80). The 400 free relay squad of Sykes, sophomores Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew's) and Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) and junior Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) touched in with a time of 3:16.97 to finish in first place.
The Generals also recorded five second-place finishes, led by junior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville), who took second in the 400 IM (4:17.94) and the 200 back in a time of 1:58.38. Other second-place finishes included Brian Stirling in the 200 free (1:48.42), first-year David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) in the 200 fly (1:56.20) and senior Brandon Wilder (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) in the 500 free (5:00.31).
W&L returns to action on Nov. 13 as they host Wingate and Queens (N.C.) at 2:00 pm.
