LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Washington and Lee men's and women's swim teams competed in the Centre College Invitational,along with DePauw University, Washington University and Centre at the University of Louisville on Saturday afternoon.
Washington University claimed the top spot for both the men and women, finishing with 734 points on the men's side. They were followed by W&L (716), DePauw (697) and Centre (374). For the women, WU collected 720 points, followed by DePauw (634), W&L (610.5) and Centre (483.5).
On the men's side, the Generals were paced by top finishes from three different swimmers. In the 50 free, sophomore Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) swam a top time of 21.39, while junior Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) took the 200 back in a time of 1:56.75. The other top individual finisher was first-year David Ireland (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood), who swam the 200 breast in a top time of 2:13.02.
For the women, the Generals had four swimmers record second-place finishes. Sophomore Delaney Rolfe touched in second with a time of 2:00.24 in the 200 free, while junior Jocelyn Cassada (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) recorded a time of 1:02.75 to finish second in the 100 back. Also recording top-two finishes for W&L was sophomore Brittany Ross (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) in the 200 fly (2:14.33) and junior Katie Salvati (Roselle Park, N.J./Mount Saint Mary Academy) in the 200 back (2:13.74).
The W&L men return to action on Friday as they host Gardner-Webb at 6:30 pm. The women next take to the pool on Saturday, hosting Randolph-Macon at 1:00 pm.
