W&L Men's Swimming Finishes Fourth at BMC Championship
CHARLOTTE, N.C. –The Washington and Lee men’s
swimming team wrapped up competition at the Bluegrass Mountain
Conference Champion Championship meet held at the Mecklenburg
County Aquatic Club in Charlotte, N.C. on Saturday and came away
with a fourth-place team finish.
Wingate University claimed the team championship with 636 points,
followed by The University of Tampa (624), Johns Hopkins (503),
W&L (351.5) and Florida Southern (327.5) in the top five.
W&L finished the day with three more NCAA cut times. Sophomore
Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) recorded an NCAA
’A’ cut time of 1:50.13 while finishing third in the
200 back, and fellow sophomore Brian Stirling (Skillman,
N.J./Montgomery) finished fifth in the 100 free with a NCAA
‘B’ cut time of 46.40.
The 400 free relay squad of seniors Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills,
Kan./Shawnee) and Nick Talluri (Mount Airy, N.C./Mount Airy),
first-year Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew’s) and
Brian Stirling finished with a time of 3:07.21, good for sixth
place and a NCAA ‘B’ cut time.
Other top finishes on the day for the Generals included senior Dan
Austin (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont), finishing ninth in the 1650
free (16:42.12).
The W&L men’s swimming team will return to action in
March as they take part in the NCAA D-III swimming championships,
hosted by the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
