CHARLOTTE, Va. – The Washington and Lee men’s
swimming team resides in fourth place following the third day of
competition at the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championships held
at the Mecklenberg Aquatics Center on Friday.
Wingate University leads the standings with 446 points, followed by The University of Tampa (410), Johns Hopkins (352), W&L (257) and Florida Southern (212) in the top five.
The Generals had several NCAA ‘B’ cut times and broke one school record on the day. Sophomore Brian Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) finished the 100 fly in a school-best and NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 50.36 while finishing in third place. Fellow sophomore Chris Washnock (Greer, S.C./Greenville) finished second in the 400 IM, recording a cut time of 4:02.66.
The 200 medley relay squad of first-years Wayde Marsh (Milford, Del./Salesianum School) and Rick Sykes (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) and sophomores Robert Grattan (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) and Brian Stirling and also notched an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 1:34.07, finishing in fourth place.
Earlier in the day, sophomore Jeff Stirling (Skillman, N.J./Montgomery) swam in the 100 fly prelims, finishing with an NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 51.09, while the 200 free relay squad of Sykes, Brian Stirling, first-year Tyler Gehrs (Alexandria, Va./St. Andrew’s) and senior Brandon Barnds (Mission Hills, Kan./Shawnee) time-trialed a cut time of 1:23.75.
The Generals will return to action on Saturday for the final day of the BMC Championship.
