W&L MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO EASTERN MENNONITE, 2-1

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Benjamin Yoder scored a goal and added an assist to give the seventh-seeded Eastern Mennonite men's soccer team a 2-1 win over third-seeded Washington and Lee in the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament on Friday evening in Virginia Beach, Va.

Yoder gave the Royals (10-7-3) a 1-0 lead at the 13:58 mark when he scored off an assist from Andrew Moore. EMU extended to a 2-0 advantage at 31:42 when Yoder feed Junior Kamandua, who put his shot into the back of the Generals' net. W&L junior midfielder Rhett McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) pulled the Generals to within 2-1 at 43:29 when he scored off a penalty kick, but the Generals where unable to score the equalizer in the second half.

Both teams fired off 13 shots, while W&L held a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.

W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) made four saves, while Tim Koehn stopped five shots for the Royals.

Washington and Lee finishes its season with a 9-6-2 record.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS RANDOLPH-MACON, 4-1

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Kyle Garcia (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) scored a goal and added an assist to help lead the third-seeded Washington and Lee men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over sixth-seeded Randolph-Macon in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Watt Field.

Garcia gave the Generals (9-5-2) a 1-0 lead with 10:16 gone-by on an unassisted tally and the game remained 1-0 heading into halftime. The Yellow Jackets (12-4-2) tied the game at 1-1 at 55:49 when senior defender Jamie Flynn (Baltimore, Md./Perry Hall) scored on a penalty kick.

W&L retook the lead at 62:48 when sophomore midfielder Josh Dodds (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) scored off an assist from Garcia. The Generals pushed their lead to 3-1 at 72:12 on an unassisted tally by junior midfielder Rhett McCraw and sophomore forward Travis Short (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) ended the scoring with an unassisted goal at 85:45.

The Generals outshot R-MC, 14-8, but the Yellow Jackets held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) made one save, while senior netminder Nick Warner (Timonium, Md./Dulaney) stopped four shots for the Yellow Jackets.

Washington and Lee will play seventh-seeded Eastern Mennonite in the ODAC semfinals on Fri., Nov. 4. The site and time are still to be determined.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER DOWNS LYNCHBURG, 2-1

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) scored a pair of goals to lift Washington and Lee to a 2-1 win over Lynchburg in ODAC men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Shellenberger Field.

Palmer opened the scoring just 10:46 into the game as he stole the ball from a defender and found the net. The Hornets (8-8, 3-6) knotted the game at 1-1 at the 54:10 mark as Brian Cocchiola took a rebounded shot and beat W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel). However, Palmer tallied the game-winner at the 84:40 mark, heading in a cross from senior midfielder Ryan Light (Clarksburg, W.Va./Robert C. Byrd).

Sheedy played all 90 minutes in goal for the Generals (8-5-2, 5-2-2), stopping three shots. Todd Perkins played the opening 45 minutes in goal for the Hornets, stopping three shots. He was spelled by Corey Zimmerman, who also notched three saves in the final 45 minutes.

Washington and Lee will return to action on Saturday as it will host an ODAC tournament quarterfinal contest. The opponent and time are yet to be determined.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO VWC, 1-0

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Virginia Wesleyan's Ryan Cassel scored off an assist from Kelvin Murray just 1:53 into the game and the Marlins' defense would make it stand up as VWC defeated Washington and Lee 1-0 in ODAC men's soccer action on Saturday evening.

W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) played all 90 minutes, making one save. Kyle Williams also played all 90 minutes in goal for the Marlins, posting three saves.

For the game, the teams tied in shots (8-8) and W&L held a slim 4-3 edge on penalty kicks.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Tuesday as it travels to Lynchburg for a 4:00 pm contest.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS ROANOKE, 2-1, IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Kyle Garcia (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) scored off an assist from junior defender Scot Pittman (Waxhaw, N.C./Charlotte Country Day) with just 2:58 remaining in the second overtime period to give Washington and Lee a 2-1 victory over Roanoke in ODAC men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.

After a scoreless first half, Garcia gave the Generals (7-4-2, 4-1-2) a 1-0 lead when he scored off a feed from sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) at 47:30. The Maroons (7-5, 5-2) tied the game at 1-1 after sophomore midfielder Eric Eversole (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) scored off a throw in that was misplayed by W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) at the 57:29 mark.

Both offenses were held in check for the rest of the second half and through the first overtime period, but the Generals only needed one shot in the second extra period. In the second stanza, Garcia took a long pass from Pittman and after beating a Roanoke defender and pulling sophomore netminder Austin Rose (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) out of the goal, Garcia fired his shot into the empty net to give W&L the win.

The Generals outshot the Maroons, 12-11, and held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Sheedy finished with five saves, while Rose stopped six shots.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Virginia Wesleyan for a 4:30 pm game.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS BLUEFIELD, 2-0

BLUEFIELD, Va. -- Sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) scored two goals to give the Washington and Lee men's soccer team a 2-0 win over Bluefield on Friday evening in Bluefield, Va.

Palmer tallied an unassisted goal in the 39th minute to give W&L a 1-0 lead which it would take into halftime.

Palmer then ended the scoring in the 52nd minute when he scored off a pass from freshman defender Fletcher McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal).

W&L outshot the Rams, 5-0, and held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) played the entire game to pick up his fourth win of the season. Senior netminder Dave Turpin also played the entire game and made three saves for Bluefield.

With the win the Generals improve to 6-4-2, while the Rams fell to 6-7.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team played its fifth double-overtime game of the season and came away with a 1-1 tie against ODAC-foe Eastern Mennonite on Wednesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Royals (6-6-2, 2-3-1) scored at the 34:38 mark to take a 1-0 lead when sophomore forward Jared Byler (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley) took a pass from senior midfielder Adam Shank (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) and buried his shot into the back of the Generals' net.

The score remained 1-0 until W&L (5-4-2, 3-1-2) tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) scored off a feed from sophomore midfielder Josh Dodds (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) at 68:10. Both teams fired off two shots in the overtime periods, but couldn't score the game-winner.

EMU outshot the Generals, 15-14, and held a 10-6 advantage in corner kicks.

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior midfielder Rhett McCraw (Greenville, S.C./Christ Church Episcopal) scored an unassisted goal with 1:19 remaining in the first overtime period to give Washington and Lee a 2-1 win over Guilford in ODAC men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field.

Both defenses controlled the game for most of the first half until Quaker freshman forward Scott Meguid (Durham, N.C./Cardinal Gibbons) scored on a free kick with just 2:21 left in the first half to give Guilford (4-5-1, 0-4) a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Generals (5-4-1, 3-1-1) finally got their offense going in the second half and tied the game at 1-1 when sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) scored off a feed from senior midfielder Brett Strohsacker (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) at the 80:28 mark, which set up McCraw's game-winner.

The Keydets (5-4-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead 20:35 in the game as junior forward Charles Nweke (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) found the net off an assist from freshman midfielder Austin Keller (Midlothian, Va./Clover Hill).

VMI added to its lead with a pair of second half scores, the first tallied by sophomore midfielder Josh Hanna (Virginia Beach, Va./Home Schooled) off a free kick from just outside the box at the 46:56 mark. The Generals (4-3-1, 2-1-1) fired off 10 of their 13 shots in regulation, but were unable to find the back of the Yellow Jackets' net. Randolph-Macon (8-1-1, 2-1-1) got off 12 shots, but wasn't able to get any past W&L sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel).

Both teams had three corner kicks, while the Generals commited 16 fouls to just six for the Yellow Jackets.

Sheedy made a career-high 10 saves, while senior netminder Nick Warner stopped eight shots for Randolph-Macon.

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Mary Washington sophomore forward Yusuf Harden scored off an assist from freshman midfielder Tommy DiNuzzo with 46 seconds remaining to lift the Eagles to a 1-0 win over Washington and Lee in men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.

The two teams combined for just 14 shots and three corner kicks in the contest. The win improved Mary Washington to 4-4-2 overall, while the Generals fell to 4-3 overall.

The Generals (3-2, 1-1) opened the scoring at the 3:44 mark as sophomore forward Travis Short (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) found the net off an assist by senior midfielder Brett Strohsacker (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion). Short then assisted on a goal by sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) just 20 seconds later and sophomore midfielder Josh Dodds (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) ended the stretch with a goal off another Strohsacker assist at the 5:32 mark. After a scoreless first half, the Generals (2-2, 0-1) got on the scoreboard when senior defender Derrick Lott (Knoxville, Tenn./Knoxville Catholic) scored on a penalty kick at 51:12. Just over three minutes later, the Eagles (4-3, 1-0) tied the score when freshman forward Chris Thomas scored off a feed from sophomore forward Ben Ostrander.

However, Thomas scored his second goal of the game at 70:48 to even the score at 2-2, setting up Knopp's game-winner.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER FALLS TO SOUTHERN VIRGINIA, 3-2, IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Junior Greg McClain (Middletown, Calif.) scored his second goal of the game with just 45 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give the Southern Virginia men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Washington and Lee on Tuesday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Generals (2-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 14:58 mark on an unassisted goal by sophomore midfielder Josh Dodds (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar). The Knights (2-4) evened the game at 1-1 just 3:34 later when McClain scored off a pass from freshman Daniel Hyde (Vernal, Utah). The game remained deadlocked at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Dodds then tallied his second goal of the game at 64:06 to give W&L a 2-1 lead. However, SVU responded to knot the game at 2-2 after freshman Dax Farnsworth (San Antonio, Texas) took a corner kick from freshman Ezra Belmont (Ontario, Calif.) and buried his shot into the back of the Generals' net, setting up McClain's game-winner.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and senior netminder Mike Stanton (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Olympia) combined to make one stop for the Generals. Freshman goalkeeper Brady Anderson (Buena Vista, Va.) made nine saves for the Knights.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Saturday when it opens its ODAC schedule at Bridgewater. The game is slated to begin at 1:00 pm.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER EDGES CATHOLIC, 3-2, IN DOUBLE OVERTIME

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) scored an unassisted goal 4:46 into the second overtime period to give the Washington and Lee men's soccer team a 3-2 victory over Catholic University on Sunday afternoon at Watt Field.

The Cardinals (1-3-1) jumped on the scoreboard at the 18:53 mark on an unassisted goal by senior midfielder Bryan Seifarth (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg). The Generals (2-0) then tied the game at 1-1 at 24:07 when sophomore midfielder Josh Dodds (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) scored off a feed from junior midfielder Kyle Garcia (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster).

Catholic retook the lead just 3:18 into the second half after W&L scored an own goal. However, the Generals were able to even the score at 2-2 when Garcia found the back of the Cardinals' net at the 62:38 mark, setting up Palmer's game-winner.

In a physical game, the two teams were whistled for 48 fouls and W&L outshot the Cardinals, 27-7.

W&L MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS SEWANEE, 2-1

CARY, N.C. -- The Washington and Lee men's soccer team scored two goals late in the second half to defeat Sewanee, 2-1, in its season opener on Friday night at the SAS Complex in Cary, N.C.

Sewanee (2-1) opened up the scoring on an goal by senior forward Alex Marsden off an assist from junior midfielder Burim Deliu at 14:10 and took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Generals (1-0) evened the score at 1-1 ath the 61:41 mark when senior midfielder Ryan Light (Clarksburg, W.Va./Robert C. Byrd) fed senior midfielder Brett Strohsacker (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion).

W&L sophomore midfielder Josh Dodds (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Linn-Mar) then scored the game-winning goal off assists from senior defender Roger Morscheiser (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater) and sophomore forward Jack Palmer (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) at 75:51.

Sophomore goalkeepers Ted Sheedy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) and Jim Tartaglia (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) each played 45 minutes for the Generals and combined to make three saves. Senior netminder Tyler Blackwell stopped four shots for the Tigers.
